The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

This all sounds pretty shaky to me. Have you guys read all of the pleas for help with their dead Ipod? I would rather buy my apps then have an expensive paperweight. Good luck to all of you. I’ll play it safe for now.

hey yea i jailbroke my itouch and then i downloaded rock and cydia then when i clicked on the other apps that came with the itouch they didnt come up..then i restarted it and when i tried to turn it bck on its said “ROCK YOU PHONE” installing then i restarted it again adn now it wont turn on…help PLEASE
Was having problems with this also. Using Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit. Kept getting stuck at “entering recovery” & “connect to itunes” on ipod touch 3g. Followed the instructions exactly, but it kept happening. So I decided to not follow the instructions. What solved the problem for me was NOT running the program in WinXP Compatibility Mode! Once I bypassed that, the jailbreak was easy. Hope this helps someone else out there who what as frustrated as I was. Cheers.

Okay. So today my brother bought an iPod Touch from Walmart. I THINK it is a 3gen but I don’t know how to tell. I am assuming it is though.
I use blackra1n to jailbreak it. *Note: I have jailbroken both mine and my girlfriends iTouchs with blackra1n without issue. Anyways, I clicked make it ra1n, waited, and saw the splash screen on the ipod. blackra1n said “Wait for reboot” or something. The ipod turned off and sat there. I figured it was done and unplugged it. I attempted to turn it on and it didn’t turn on. Screen does nothing.
So, I plug it in to my computer. iTunes tells me it found an ipod in Recovery mode and I have to restore it. I attempted to exit recovery mode on ipod by holding Home + Power buttons at the same time and nothing happened. Sat there for 2 mins. Nothing. So I figured I would just restore it. When I attempt to restore it, I get either 1604 or 1600 errors every time. Tried every USB port on 3 computers, Restarting, re-installing iTunes, running blackra1n again, everything. My iPod will absolutely not do ANYTHING. I need help. I screwed up my brothers ipod he just bought today.
plug in ur cable to the ipod but not into the computer then hold down the home button then about 2 seconds after that plug the other end of the wire into the computer, it worked for me
there is still no untethered version of this right? i have jailbroken about 6 ipods, and mine was the only one that was succesfully unthetehered… and it was the 1st one i did.
so has there been an untethered version quite yet?
Iran black ra1n on my ipod touch (2nd gen 3.1 software) and it worked and everything but now it won’t turn back on and also if i plug it into itunes it doesnt even sow up as an ipod plugged in? Any suggestions???
