The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

You can do it using this program, but the jailbreak will be tethered, and you will have to run blackra1n every time you turn off your iPod or restart it. Sorry bro
When i downloaded black rain it says “this application has failed to start because ASL.dll was not found. Re-installing the app may fix probelm.” reinstalling didnt help tho…. this is for windows version

werd. it says it. i googled it and it says its itunes 9, but i don’t think it is. Can somebody help. i used blackra1n before and it worked perfectly. then my ipod touch froze two months later (ithink i downloaded something, IDK!!!) i need help.. i recently bought i touch 8gig 3g means its MC model comes with 3.1.2 version.. – when i plugged it itunes there was 3.1.3 version so since i was new to my itouch i upgrade it. –

No, try rebooting with the power+home button. It doesn’t take that long!

If you get the ASL.dll error i found the solution. Search ASL.dll in the windows search, then right click open containing folder. cut and paste black rain into that “apple support” folder. then make a desktop shortcut and run black rain!!!!!!
everything went right but when i click blacrain icon in itouch i install cydia then blackrain crashes and i dont see cydia icon on ipod why?
my ipod touch 32gb 3rd generation updated itself to 3.1.3 n now when i tried to restore it to 3.1.2 it says ipod could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible. help!
that happened to me too, u just downloaded the wrong version, theres one for 3rd gen and one for 2nd, i thought mines was 3rd gen but it was actually 2nd so try that.
