Spotify’s lack of native HomePod support leaves users in limbo

Spotify and Apple have long been at odds with each other, with Spotify accusing Apple of anticompetitive behavior in a complaint filed with the European Union in 2019. One of the key issues raised in the complaint was Apple’s alleged refusal to allow Spotify to natively support the HomePod and HomePod mini. While Apple has since opened up the speakers to third-party streaming music services, Spotify has yet to implement native support for the HomePod and HomePod mini.

The battle between Spotify and Apple over HomePod integration

According to a recent newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Spotify has refused to budge on the issue despite Apple making the necessary APIs available. While a post on Spotify’s community website advocating for native HomePod support has over 5,800 votes in favor of the idea since it was submitted in 2020, Spotify has claimed that there hasn’t been a “significant volume” of complaints about the lack of HomePod support.

Spotify’s failure to support the HomePod has frustrated many users who prefer to control their music with voice commands through Siri. The inability to control Spotify with Siri on the HomePod has been a major inconvenience for users who have to switch to the Apple Music app to use the voice assistant. Despite this, Spotify has yet to follow through on its promise to support AirPlay 2, which would allow users to stream their Spotify music to the HomePod through their iPhone or iPad.

Spotify has repeatedly promised to update its iPhone and iPad app with AirPlay 2 support, but it has failed to deliver so far. The company has stated that it remains committed to supporting AirPlay 2 at some point in the future, but it was unable to provide a definitive timeframe. This delay has frustrated subscribers who have been waiting for Spotify to support AirPlay 2 since at least 2021.

In conclusion, the lack of native support for the HomePod and HomePod mini remains a sore point for Spotify users who prefer to control their music with voice commands through Siri. Despite Apple making the necessary APIs available, Spotify has yet to implement native support for the HomePod and HomePod mini.

Additionally, the delay in supporting AirPlay 2 has frustrated subscribers who have been waiting for Spotify to support the feature for years. With no clear timeframe for when these issues will be resolved, Spotify users will have to continue waiting for a more seamless integration with their Apple devices.
