Apple Seeds tvOS 27 Beta 2 with Faster AirPlay and Smart Downloads

Apple seeded tvOS 27 beta 2 to developers today, June 22, two weeks after the first beta arrived following the WWDC 2026 keynote. The release is part of a beta 2 wave that also covers iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, visionOS 27, and HomePod 27, though watchOS 27 beta 2 had not yet been released at the time of writing.

Developers can download and install the update directly through the Settings app on any compatible Apple TV, provided they have a free developer account.

What’s New in tvOS 27

The confirmed feature set for tvOS 27, drawing from what Apple has shown since beta 1, covers several practical improvements across the platform:

  • Redesigned Podcasts app
  • Options for larger text across the interface
  • A more responsive Control Center
  • Faster AirPlay connections from other Apple devices
  • Smoother app launches and animations
  • AppleCare coverage details now visible in the Settings app
  • Smart downloads on Apple TV

None of these are sweeping changes, which reflects the limited stage time tvOS received at the WWDC keynote this year. Apple did not publish a dedicated tvOS 27 preview page at launch, unlike its treatment of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, placing it among the quieter platform updates in this cycle.

Which Apple TV Models Are Supported

tvOS 27 supports the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and newer, which means the Apple TV HD from 2015 and the Apple TV 4K (1st generation) from 2017 are both dropped. The cut has drawn mixed reactions from the community, with many pointing out that the current Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) is itself four years old.

A new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is expected to arrive later this year, likely alongside the final tvOS 27 release in September, so the compatibility cut lands at a moment when the hardware lineup is already overdue for a refresh. For users still running the older dropped models, major software updates are now finished.

This year’s developer betas have been more stable than usual across all platforms, though Apple still recommends installing them only on secondary devices. Public betas for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, tvOS 27, HomePod 27, watchOS 27, and AirPods firmware are expected next month through beta.apple.com, with visionOS being the one platform Apple continues to exclude from the public beta program.

The tvOS 27 feature list is modest enough that most Apple TV owners will feel little urgency to test the beta, but the faster AirPlay and animation improvements are the kind of polish that tends to be more noticeable in daily use than any headline feature.
