macOS Golden Gate is expected to ship with more toggles buried in System Settings than any macOS release in recent memory. Most of them stay on their defaults after installation, and most of those defaults are not what you actually want.
Once Siri AI is turned on, it draws on personal context across Mail, Messages, and Photos to answer questions and take action across apps. That alone is worth a second look before you leave everything as-is.
Decide What Siri AI Is Allowed to See
Open System Settings, then Apple Intelligence & Siri, and go through the list of apps Siri AI can search. You do not have to grant access to everything at once.
- Turn off personal context for specific apps if you would rather keep Siri AI to basic requests
- Visual Intelligence, triggered with Shift-Command-Space, can read whatever is on your screen. Review that permission separately from the main Siri toggle
- If you share a Mac with family members, check whether Siri AI’s saved conversations sync to their iCloud account too
Quiet Down the Interface
A few cosmetic settings are worth tuning for daily use rather than leaving at their install-time defaults.
- The Liquid Glass transparency slider sits in System Settings, Appearance. A more tinted setting improves legibility and can ease the load on older GPUs
- Safari’s new Notify Me feature monitors pages for price drops and restocks in the background. Turn it off per site from the page’s Notify Me menu if you do not want Safari watching pages you visited once
- Review Login Items & Extensions under System Settings, General, and remove anything you no longer recognize. A fresh macOS install is a natural point to clear out background clutter
Update Parental Controls If Kids Share the Mac
macOS Golden Gate expands Apple’s child-safety tools, and none of them turn themselves on automatically.
- Ask to Browse requires a child to request permission before opening any new website in Safari
- Time Allowances replace flat daily limits with guidance tailored to a child’s age, based on Apple’s own research
- Schedules control which apps a child can open at different times of day and across the week
- Communication Safety protections now extend further across messaging and content types
All four live under System Settings, Screen Time, and none of them carry over automatically from macOS Tahoe, so they need to be set up again on Golden Gate even if you configured them before.
