Apple AirPods 2024: New design, improved noise cancellation, and USB-C charging

According to a new report, Apple is planning a major overhaul of its AirPods lineup, introducing exciting changes to its wireless earbuds. This move coincides with Apple’s commitment to adopting the USB-C standard, aligning its accessory lineup with the European Union’s common charger law.

Apple plans to offer two versions of the fourth-generation AirPods, at different price points

As reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is set to refresh its AirPods lineup in 2024. The revamped lineup will focus on a new design, innovative features, and a transition to USB-C technology. As part of the revamp, Apple plans to discontinue its second and third-generation AirPods, making way for new and improved models.

The fourth-generation AirPods will replace the discontinued models. Similar to how the iPhone lineup has a base model and a Pro model, the AirPods 4 will come in two variants.

The fourth-generation AirPods are expected to feature a design that merges elements from both the third-generation AirPods and the premium AirPods Pro, sporting shorter stems. This design update promises to bring a fresh look and feel to the AirPods.

To differentiate between the two options, the premium model will come equipped with noise cancellation technology and an enhanced charging case that incorporates built-in speakers for Find My alerts, much like the current AirPods Pro. This enhanced case design will make it easier for users to locate their lost AirPods.

The entry-level AirPods will offer a better fit, although they won’t have replaceable tips like the AirPods Pro. Additionally, both models of the fourth-generation AirPods will come with USB-C charging cases, aligning them with the AirPods Pro’s charging technology.

Apple could also release a new version of its over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max, in 2024. This update will include a USB-C port and new color options. Although no major upgrades are expected, the introduction of the USB-C port will enhance compatibility and charging speed.

The move to USB-C technology isn’t limited to just AirPods; it’s part of Apple’s broader strategy to phase out the Lightning port in its devices in response to European Union regulations.

In 2025, Apple plans to further revamp its AirPods Pro with a new design and an upgraded chip. Additionally, Apple is exploring health-related features for the AirPods Pro, with a particular focus on hearing-related functions. This innovation could open up new possibilities for the AirPods Pro, potentially serving as a hearing aid replacement.
