A recent market survey by International Data Corporation (IDC) reveals that Apple dominated the booming tablet market in the first quarter of 2021. With 39.9 million units shipped, the tablet sales saw a 55.2% Y-o-Y growth. As per the report, “growth of this magnitude has not been seen since the third quarter of 2013 when the tablet market grew by 56.9% year over year.”
Last year, Apple introduced three new iPad models: iPad Pro (4th generation), iPad mini, and iPad Air, with new flat edge-to-edge design and advanced technology. Apple reported record revenue in Q1 2021 with $89.6 billion in earnings and the iPad line-up generated $7807 million in revenue in Q1 2021 with 178% growth for the same quarter the previous year. The company’s CEO Tim Cook said accredited the remarkable growth to delivering innovative products for consumers to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic lifestyle. Similarly, the new reports also accredit the growth of the tablet market to the availability of new options to choose from.
Apple dominated the tablet market in Q1 2021
Apple’s tablet market share grew by 64.3% for the same quarter last year. iPad shipments increased from 7.7 million in Q1 2020 to 12.7 million in Q1 2021 which earned it a 31.7% market share. The report states that:
“While vaccine rollouts and businesses returning to offices may slow down the work-from-home trend, we are still far from returning to ‘normal’ working conditions and hence the demand for tablets, especially detachables, is expected to continue for a while,” said Anuroopa Nataraj, research analyst with IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. “However, as buyers increasingly turn towards competing products, such as thin and light notebooks for work or entertainment and Chromebooks for education, the future of tablets will remain under constant competition, leaving the heavy lifting to larger brands such as Apple, Samsung, Amazon, and Microsoft.”
Samsung stood at second position with 20.0% market share and Lenovo held the third spot with 9.4% market share. On April 20, Apple announced new 12.9-inch and 11-inch iPad Pro models powered by M1 chip is likely to further booth the tablet’s demand for the high performance and incredible battery life delivered by Apple silicon.
