Apple has seeded iOS 26.6 and iPadOS 26.6 release candidate builds to developers. These updates come just a week after the fifth developer beta builds were released for testing. To download and install the new updates on your iPhone or iPad, simply go to Settings > General > Software Update on your device.
Apple has been testing iOS 26.6 and iPadOS 26.6 with developers since May. The updates had included any new features or changes so they have been considered maintenance updates. However, now that the release candidates are available, an interesting new update has been discovered, which actually prepares the devices for the upcoming major iOS 27 software update:
This update includes bug fixes, security updates and optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27.
The Spotlight index is getting a huge improvement in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 due to the way it will work with Siri AI. It is deeply integrated, specially by exposing first-party and third-party app data, which allows Siri AI to provide personal context. This is also the first time we have seen the release notes for an Apple software update talking about a feature that is primarily for an upcoming software update.
For users like yours truly, who jumped directly on to iOS 27 since the first developer beta, I wonder if I have missed out anything by not going from iOS 26.6 to the latest and greatest since my device did not get a chance to have its Spotlight index optimized. Apple would have definitely considered for this use case.
This is likely the last major update for iOS 26 for developers, unless there are any showstopper bugs found in the release candidate. If everything is ok, we should be getting the final build releases to all users next week.
Apple has also seeded macOS Tahoe 26.6, watchOS 26.6, visionOS 26.6, and tvOS 26.6 release candidates to developers.
