Apple Watch Series 12: The Most Accurate Heart Rate Sensor Yet, Plus a Whole New Way to Read Your Body

Apple just pulled the wraps off Apple Watch Series 12, and this is the biggest health upgrade the Watch has seen in years. At the center of it all is something Apple is calling the Health Sensing System, a rebuilt sensor stack paired with the new S11 chip that Apple says delivers the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable. That claim isn’t marketing fluff either. Apple ran a study across more than 1,000 participants against leading wearables on the market, and the Series 12 came out on top.

Pre-orders are open now, with the watch landing on shelves September 18. Pricing starts at $399 in the US, and it’s rolling out in the UAE along with more than 50 other countries.

Heart Rate Sensing That Actually Keeps Up With You

The headline upgrade here is frequency. Series 12 now checks your heart rate every five seconds, all day long, thanks to larger, more power-efficient green LEDs on the optical sensor. Previous Apple Watches sampled far less often, so this is a real jump in how closely the watch tracks what your body is doing between workouts, not just during them. You’ll also get a dedicated heart rate complication on the watch face so you can glance at your current reading without opening an app.

HRV tracking got the same treatment. Apple is now measuring heart rate variability up to 24 times more often than before, and it’s splitting the data into two views: recovery HRV for day to day stress and recovery signals, and overall HRV for a broader read on cardiovascular health. There’s also a new daytime vitals view that sits alongside the existing overnight vitals, so you can catch a dip in your numbers before it even shows up in your sleep data.

Readiness: One Score to Tell You How Hard to Push

This is the feature I think most people will actually use every morning. Readiness pulls together your recent training load, vitals, activity, and sleep score into a single number from 0 to 10, paired with a plain-language recommendation: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.

It’s not a static number either. Readiness updates through the day as new data comes in, so a hard workout or a rough night’s sleep will shift your score in real time. Apple built the scoring model using data from its long-running Heart and Movement Study, working with exercise scientists and physicians, which is why it feels less like a gimmick and more like something you’d actually trust before deciding whether to skip leg day.

Battery Life That Matches the New Sensors

More frequent sensing usually means more battery drain, but Apple says everyday battery life holds steady at up to 24 hours. Where it actually improves is during workouts: up to 10 hours on an outdoor workout, a 25 percent jump over the previous generation.

Charging got faster too. Just 15 minutes on the charger now gets you up to 12 hours of extra battery, which is 50 percent more than before. That’s the kind of upgrade you don’t notice until you forget to charge it overnight and still make it through the day.

The Most Accurate Step Tracking Apple Has Shipped

Apple rebuilt the pedometer model from the ground up using new machine learning algorithms, which means better distance accuracy on indoor walks and runs and more reliable step counts throughout the day. Apple is calling it the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch on the market. There’s also a new Steps complication powered by the S11 chip, so your count is right there on your watch face in real time.

A Redesigned Health App With a Longevity Tab

The bigger health story isn’t just on your wrist. Later this year, the Health app on iPhone is getting a redesign built around Apple Intelligence, with two new tabs worth paying attention to. Insights surfaces timely health information that updates throughout the day. Longevity is the more interesting one, and it includes a new Health Age feature that shows how your metrics stack up against your actual age.

Apple is also adding movement evaluations that use the iPhone’s camera and vision-based AI models alongside Apple Watch heart rate data to assess flexibility, strength, and balance. And if you want to go deeper, you’ll be able to book lab tests covering more than 50 biomarkers for $119 directly through the Health app, with around 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations across the US offering the service.

Audio Intelligence: Apple’s Answer to “Wait, What Did You Just Say?”

This is the feature that’s going to get the most attention, and it’s arriving later this year. The S11 chip and on-device Apple Intelligence models power a new set of Audio Intelligence features designed to help you stay present in conversations without needing your phone nearby.

  • Sound Recognition: Alerts deaf and hard-of-hearing users to important sounds like doorbells, alarms, sirens, or a crying baby, even without an iPhone in range.
  • Live Rewind: Double-press the Digital Crown and the watch shows you the last 15 seconds of conversation as text. Perfect for the moment you tune out and someone asks if you caught that.
  • Siri Recap: Generates a short summary and title after a conversation, saved in the new Siri app so you can jog your memory later.
  • Shazam: Detects music playing around you and shows the song and artist right on your Smart Stack.

Apple is clearly aware this feature invites privacy questions, and it’s leaning hard into the answer. Nothing gets recorded or stored. Audio is processed inside a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave on the S11 chip and deleted immediately after. The features don’t identify who’s speaking, Siri Recap produces a summary rather than a transcript, and Live Rewind plays an audible chime and shows an on-screen indicator any time it’s active, so the people around you know it’s running. Everything is opt-in, and you can flip Siri Recap on or off straight from Control Center.

Siri AI Arrives on Your Wrist

With watchOS 27, Series 12 gets Siri AI, the rebuilt version of Siri with personal context and broader world knowledge. There’s a new Siri app for continuing conversations on the go, plus a Siri Modular watch face designed to put Siri one tap away.

What Else watchOS 27 Brings

  • A dynamic app grid that surfaces your five most-used apps automatically
  • A new single-handed tap gesture for opening Smart Stack widgets, so double tap scrolls and a single tap selects
  • Smarter Smart Stack suggestions, like a parked car reminder or a birthday nudge
  • Cycle Tracking support for perimenopause and menopause
  • Workout Buddy now works without your iPhone nearby, and it’s adding Spanish support

Design, Colors, and Bands

Series 12 comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes. Aluminum models pick up dark bronze, black, and light gold alongside the familiar space gray, and now use Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is 60 percent tougher than the glass on the previous generation. Titanium models add a new radiant gold finish next to natural titanium, and there’s a striking new ceramic option in pearl white and night blue.

On the band side, Sport Bands add olive, burgundy, wildflower blue, and pale succulent, while Sport Loops introduce a plaid pattern using inkjet printing. The Modern Buckle now comes in a woven material and, for the first time, with gold hardware to match the radiant gold titanium case. Apple Watch Hermès also gets its own radiant gold option along with a new Rocabar Club band.

Price and Availability

Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 and is available for pre-order now, with in-store availability beginning September 18 across the US, UAE, UK, and more than 50 other countries and regions. watchOS 27 rolls out September 14 for Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later. Siri AI launches in beta the same day in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support following in October.

Between the readiness score, the jump in heart rate sensing frequency, and Audio Intelligence handling the privacy questions properly instead of glossing over them, this feels like the most meaningful health update Apple Watch has had in a while. The design refresh is nice, but it’s the sensor work underneath that’s going to change how people actually use this thing day to day.
