Apple has quietly put out a new version of its Apple Watch charging puck, and it is expected to come with a catch. The charger delivers noticeably faster charging speeds, but only if you own one of the two watches launched this year, Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4.
The new Apple Watch Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C Cable is now selling on for $29 in the US. It replaces the previous charger that shipped in the box with every Apple Watch since 2023, and it looks identical from the outside.
The New Charger Pushes 10W Instead of 5W
The updated charger carries model number A3277 and can deliver up to 10W of power. The version it replaces topped out at 5W, which has been the ceiling for Apple Watch charging for years. That extra wattage is the whole reason this charger exists. Without it, none of the speed gains below are possible.
Doubling the charger’s output doesn’t help unless the watch on the other end can accept it. Apple built new charging hardware into the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 specifically to take advantage of it.
If you own an Apple Watch Series 11 or Apple Watch Ultra 3, plugging in the new charger won’t speed anything up. Those watches are capped at the same charging speeds they’ve always had, regardless of which puck you use.
Apple shared exact numbers for how much charge each watch picks up in a short session, and the difference between old and new hardware is significant.
The Apple Watch Series 12 gains 4 extra hours of battery life per 15-minute charge compared to the old setup. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 sees the biggest jump, picking up an extra 6 hours in the same window.

Your Wall Adapter Matters Just as Much as the Charging Puck
The new charging cable can only pull 10W if it’s plugged into a wall adapter rated for 10W or higher using USB-C Power Delivery. An older 5W adapter, like the one Apple used to ship with iPhones years ago, will bottleneck the whole setup.
- Use any USB-C Power Delivery adapter rated 10W or higher
- A 20W or higher adapter also works fine, since PD adapters scale down automatically
- Check your adapter’s printed wattage if you’re unsure, since not every USB-C brick clears the 10W bar
Anyone who already picked up a fast charger for their iPhone 18 Pro almost certainly has an adapter that clears this requirement without needing to buy anything new.
