Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Ultra 4: Is It Worth Upgrading?

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 builds on the Ultra 3 without changing the formula. Both models have a 49mm titanium case, a 3,000-nit Always-On display, dual-frequency GPS, satellite connectivity, and the same rugged water and dust resistance. The biggest changes are inside the newer model, including the S11 chip, longer battery life, and more advanced health tracking.

That makes this a more interesting comparison for existing Ultra 3 owners than for first-time buyers. Ultra 4 offers useful improvements, but it does not replace the features that made Ultra 3 an Ultra in the first place. The question is whether the new battery and health capabilities are enough to justify upgrading.

Design And Display

Apple has kept the Ultra design virtually unchanged. Ultra 3 and Ultra 4 both use a 49mm titanium case, Natural Titanium and Black Titanium finishes, and a sapphire crystal display.

The display specifications are also identical. Both have an Always-On LTPO3 wide-angle OLED panel with a 422 x 514-pixel resolution, 1,245 square millimeters of display area, and brightness reaching up to 3,000 nits.

Ultra 4 is slightly heavier at 63g or 63.1g, compared with 61.6g or 61.8g for Ultra 3. The difference is small, so there is no meaningful design advantage to upgrading.

S11 Chip vs S10

Ultra 4 moves from the S10 chip to Apple’s S11 chip. Both processors use a 64-bit dual-core CPU and are paired with the W3 wireless chip, second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, 4-core Neural Engine, and 64GB of storage.

Apple Watch S11 Chip

The chip change is important because Ultra 4’s newer hardware supports its latest features, but it does not create a dramatic difference in the basic Apple Watch experience. Apps, notifications, workouts, and everyday interactions are not transformed simply by moving from S10 to S11.

For an Ultra 3 owner who has no complaints about performance, the processor upgrade by itself is not a compelling reason to replace the watch.

Health And Wellness

Health tracking is one of the areas where Ultra 4 adds capabilities that Ultra 3 does not have.

Both watches provide ECG, hypertension notifications, high and low heart rate notifications, irregular rhythm notifications, Blood Oxygen, sleep tracking, sleep apnea notifications, sleep score, wrist temperature sensing, Cycle Tracking, Training Load, Noise monitoring, and Health Age.

Ultra 4 adds Recovery HRV and high-frequency background heart rate tracking. Its Vitals app also includes HRV alongside heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, and sleep duration.

These changes matter most if you actively use the Apple Watch to monitor recovery and daily health trends. For basic health tracking, sleep monitoring, workouts, and heart rate information, Ultra 3 already covers most of the same ground.

Battery Life And Charging

Battery life is the clearest reason to consider Ultra 4.

Ultra 3 provides up to 42 hours of normal use, while Ultra 4 increases that figure to 50 hours. Low Power Mode also rises from up to 72 hours to 84 hours.

Charging hardware is similar, with both models reaching 80% in about 45 minutes. Ultra 4 gets more usable time from short charging sessions, however. A 15-minute charge provides up to 18 hours of normal use compared with 12 hours on Ultra 3.

Ultra 4 also provides up to 10 hours of sleep tracking from a five-minute charge, compared with up to 8 hours on Ultra 3.

For people who regularly spend long periods away from a charger, this is a substantial improvement. It is especially useful for travel, multi-day outdoor activities, long workouts, and overnight health tracking.

GPS, Satellite And Outdoor Features

There is no major upgrade to navigation or satellite connectivity between the two generations.

Both models use Precision L1 + L5 dual-frequency GPS and support satellite connectivity, Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages and Find My via satellite, offline maps, Waypoints, Backtrack, and Elevation view.

The same applies to durability. Both watches are water resistant to 100 meters, support scuba diving and high-speed water sports, and have a depth rating of 40 meters. Both also have IP6X dust resistance, EN13319 certification, a sapphire crystal display, and MIL-STD 810H testing.

For Ultra 3 owners, this is important because Ultra 4 does not add a new level of outdoor capability. If you bought Ultra 3 primarily for GPS, diving, hiking, or satellite safety features, those capabilities remain largely unchanged.

Smart Features

Ultra 3 and Ultra 4 both support Apple Intelligence, Siri AI, Wrist Flick, Double Tap, and Precision Finding for iPhone.

Ultra 4 adds Audio Intelligence, which is listed as unavailable on Ultra 3. This gives the newer model another software advantage, although it is less significant than the battery and health improvements.

Audio Intelligence

The two watches also retain the same 64GB storage capacity, so Ultra 4 does not provide an increase in space for apps, music, or other content.

What Has Not Changed?

The lack of major changes is just as important as the upgrades. Ultra 4 does not introduce a new case design, larger display, higher display brightness, better GPS system, greater water resistance, or expanded storage.

Satellite connectivity is also not new to Ultra 4. Ultra 3 already supports Emergency SOS via satellite as well as Messages and Find My via satellite.

This makes Ultra 4 a refinement of Ultra 3 rather than a major redesign. The newer model improves endurance, health tracking, and some software capabilities while keeping the core Ultra experience intact.

Should You Upgrade From Ultra 3?

Ultra 4 is worth upgrading to if battery life is a priority or you want the newer health tracking features. The jump from 42 to 50 hours of normal use, along with Recovery HRV and high-frequency background heart rate tracking, gives existing Ultra 3 owners a few genuinely useful reasons to move to the newer model.

The upgrade is harder to justify if you primarily use your Ultra for workouts, GPS navigation, notifications, sleep tracking, diving, or satellite safety. Ultra 3 already provides essentially the same experience in those areas.

For new buyers, Ultra 4 is the stronger choice when the price difference is reasonable. It offers the latest chip, longer battery life, newer health features, and the same rugged hardware and outdoor capabilities as Ultra 3.

For Ultra 3 owners, however, this is not an essential upgrade. If your current battery life is sufficient and you do not need the newer health features, Ultra 3 remains a highly capable Apple Watch Ultra.
