The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are designed for different priorities. Series 12 is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes with aluminum, titanium, or ceramic cases, while Ultra 4 uses a larger 49mm titanium case built for more demanding outdoor use.
Both watches use the S11 chip, offer 64GB of storage, support advanced health tracking, and have Always-On Retina displays. The biggest differences are the display brightness, battery life, GPS, water resistance, satellite connectivity, and outdoor features.

Design And Display
The physical design is the most obvious difference between the two watches. Series 12 comes in 46mm and 42mm sizes, while Ultra 4 has a 49mm titanium case.
Series 12 offers considerably more material choices. Aluminum is available in Dark Bronze, Light Gold, Black, and Space Gray. Titanium comes in Radiant Gold and Natural, while ceramic is available in Pearl White and Night Blue.
Ultra 4 is available in Natural Titanium and Black Titanium. Its larger case also provides a slightly larger display, with 1,245 square millimeters of display area compared with 1,196 square millimeters on the 46mm Series 12.

Both use LTPO3 wide-angle OLED displays with Always-On functionality and a minimum brightness of 1 nit. Ultra 4 has the brighter panel, reaching up to 3,000 nits compared with 2,000 nits on Series 12.
S11 Chip And Performance
Both watches use Apple’s S11 chip, so there is no performance advantage between Series 12 and Ultra 4 based on the processor.
The S11 features a 64-bit dual-core processor, 4-core Neural Engine, W3 wireless chip, and second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. Both models also have 64GB of storage.
The choice between the two therefore comes down to the hardware and features surrounding the chip rather than processing performance.
Health And Wellness
Series 12 and Ultra 4 share most of Apple’s current health and wellness features. Both offer ECG, hypertension notifications, high and low heart rate notifications, irregular rhythm notifications, sleep tracking, sleep apnea notifications, sleep score, wrist temperature sensing, Cycle Tracking, training load, and the Vitals app.
Both also support Recovery HRV and high-frequency background heart rate tracking. The Vitals app tracks heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, sleep duration, and HRV on both models.
Both watches include a second-generation electrical heart sensor, an always-on optical heart sensor, temperature sensing, water temperature sensing, a high dynamic range gyroscope, compass, altimeter, and ambient light sensor.
For everyday health monitoring, there is therefore little reason to choose Ultra 4 over Series 12 based on the basic health feature set alone.
Battery Life And Charging
Battery life is one of the clearest advantages of Ultra 4. Series 12 is rated for up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode.
Ultra 4 increases those figures to up to 50 hours of normal use and up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode. That makes it much better suited to long hikes, extended workouts, travel, and situations where regular charging is difficult.
Series 12 charges from 0% to 80% in about 30 minutes, while Ultra 4 takes about 45 minutes. Despite the slower full charging time, Ultra 4 provides more battery life from a short charge.
A 15-minute charge provides up to 12 hours of normal use on Series 12 and up to 18 hours on Ultra 4. Both can provide up to 10 hours of sleep tracking from a five-minute charge.
Durability And Water Resistance
Both watches are certified IP6X dust resistant, but Ultra 4 is designed for significantly more demanding water activities.
Series 12 is water resistant to 50 meters and supports swimming and snorkeling. Its Depth app and depth gauge are designed for depths up to 6 meters.
Ultra 4 increases water resistance to 100 meters and supports swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and high-speed water sports. It has a depth gauge and Depth app rated to 40 meters and also meets EN13319 requirements.
Display protection differs as well. Series 12 uses Ceramic Shield 2 with Ion-X glass on its aluminum model, with Apple saying it is 60% tougher than the previous generation. Ultra 4 uses a tough sapphire crystal display with its titanium case.
GPS And Outdoor Features
Series 12 uses Precision L1 GPS, which covers standard workouts and everyday navigation.
Ultra 4 adds precision dual-frequency GPS using L1 and L5 frequencies. This gives it an advantage when tracking in environments where GPS signals can be affected by buildings, trees, or other obstacles.
Ultra 4 also includes Waypoints, Backtrack, and Elevation view, making it better suited to hiking, trail running, and other outdoor activities where navigation and location accuracy are important.
Connectivity And Safety
Both Series 12 and Ultra 4 support 5G and LTE on cellular models, international roaming, Apple Watch For Your Kids, Wi-Fi 4, Bluetooth 5.3, offline maps, and Apple Pay.
Ultra 4 has an important connectivity advantage with satellite features. It supports Emergency SOS via satellite as well as Messages and Find My via satellite.
Both models include Emergency SOS, international emergency calling, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, and Check In. Ultra 4 additionally has a built-in siren for emergency situations.
Which Apple Watch Should You Buy?
Apple Watch Series 12 is the better choice for most users who want a smaller, lighter Apple Watch with the latest S11 chip and current health features. It offers more case sizes and materials while retaining the core Apple Watch experience.
Ultra 4 is the better choice for users who need substantially longer battery life, more accurate GPS, greater water resistance, satellite connectivity, or a more rugged design. Its 49mm titanium case and 3,000-nit display also make it better suited to demanding outdoor use.
For everyday health tracking, workouts, notifications, calls, and general Apple Watch use, Series 12 offers most of what Ultra 4 provides. Ultra 4 becomes worth considering when its specialized outdoor and battery features match how you use your watch.
