The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 check your heart rate every five seconds, but Theater Mode quietly cuts that back to every five minutes. A new setting in the Heart menu lets you override it.
Both watches run Apple’s new Health Sensing System, which replaced the old five-minute background interval with a reading every five seconds, all day. Apple’s support page says the green LEDs on the back run continuously during the day. That constant sampling is why the light under the watch now flashes almost nonstop, and Theater Mode is where the watches back off by default.

Theater Mode Drops Heart Rate Checks Back to Every Five Minutes
Theater Mode is toggled from Control Center and keeps the display from lighting up. On the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, it also moves heart rate sensing from every five seconds to every five minutes. The most likely reason is the green light, which is easy to notice in a dark room.
Most people won’t see it when the watch is worn snug. A loose band is where the light can leak out.
Here is how heart rate sampling works across the modes:
- Normal wear reads your heart rate every five seconds.
- Theater Mode reads it every five minutes by default.
- Sleep also reads it every five minutes.
- Theater Mode with the new setting turned on goes back to every five seconds.
A two-hour movie at five-second intervals is 1,440 readings, and at five-minute intervals it is 24. Since independent testing found the new sensor tracks close to a chest strap, that is a lot of good data to give up for a movie night.
The New Toggle Sits in Settings Under Heart
The option is called “In Theater Mode” and it is off by default. Here is where to find it on the watch:
- Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4.
- Tap Heart.
- Find “Allow Continuous Measurements”.
- Turn on “In Theater Mode”.
With it on, the watch keeps sampling every five seconds while Theater Mode is active, and the green light keeps flashing with it. The same menu also has the master switch for continuous measurements, which Apple’s support page says you can turn off entirely.
Sleep Has No Matching Setting
The five-minute interval during sleep can’t be changed the same way. There is no equivalent option for Sleep Focus, and Apple’s support page says the watches switch to infrared LEDs during your sleep schedule or when a sleep focus is on.
Skipping Sleep Focus to get denser overnight data would cost you wrist temperature collection. It could also affect compatibility with the new Readiness score, which rates your day from 0 to 10. The slower sleep interval also helps battery life while you are not moving around.
