The company didn’t mention it once during its September event, yet the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are shipping with double the memory of their predecessors, and nobody outside Cupertino would have noticed if developers hadn’t gone digging through Apple’s own tools.
MacRumors confirmed the change by examining Xcode 27, Apple’s developer software, which lists both the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 with 4GB of RAM. That’s a jump from the 2GB found in the Apple Watch Series 11 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3, and it’s the kind of behind-the-scenes upgrade that matters a lot more than it sounds.
Why the Extra RAM Actually Matters
The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 both run on Apple’s new S11 chip, and that chip is doing a lot more heavy lifting than the S10 ever did. Apple is pushing Apple Intelligence onto the wrist for the first time in a meaningful way, provided the watch is paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and features like this simply need more memory to run without choking the system.
Two of the standout additions are Live Rewind text snippets and Siri Recap summaries, both of which lean on on-device processing to work quickly and privately. Siri itself is also getting a boost from the added memory, which should translate into faster responses and fewer of those awkward pauses where the watch seems to be thinking a little too hard. Doubling the RAM isn’t just a spec bump for the sake of a spec sheet. It’s the difference between Apple Intelligence feeling like a real feature on your wrist and feeling like a laggy afterthought.
No Price Increase, Despite the Chip Shortage
Here’s the part that makes this upgrade genuinely surprising. Apple has been dealing with a severe memory chip shortage throughout the year, and that shortage already pushed the company to raise prices across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac lineups in recent months. Against that backdrop, doubling the RAM in the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 would have been a reasonable moment to pass some of that cost onto customers.
Apple didn’t do that as the Apple Watch Series 12 still starts at $399 in the United States, and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 still starts at $799, matching the exact starting prices of the Apple Watch Series 11 and the Apple Watch Ultra 3. You’re getting twice the memory for the same money, which is a rare thing to see from Apple during a component shortage that has made memory more expensive across the entire industry.
The Bigger Picture
Apple has been quietly building toward Apple Intelligence becoming a genuine cross-device experience, and the Apple Watch has always been the hardest piece of that puzzle because of how limited its hardware has traditionally been. Bumping the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 to 4GB of RAM suggests Apple wanted enough headroom to run Siri AI features properly rather than cramming them in and hoping for the best.
