OpenAI is rolling out one of the biggest upgrades yet for ChatGPT’s free tier. Free and Go users will soon have unlimited text conversations powered by GPT-5.6 Luna, replacing GPT-5.5 Instant as the default model.
The update removes text-based chat limits that previously applied to free users, making ChatGPT far more practical for everyday use. While restrictions will still apply to features such as file uploads, image generation, and other advanced tools, users will no longer have to worry about running out of text prompts during normal conversations.
Alongside the free-tier improvements, OpenAI is also updating GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro subscribers with more accurate responses, a new reasoning slider, and a more consistent experience across quick replies and deeper thinking.
Free ChatGPT Gets Unlimited Text Chats
The biggest change is simple but significant: text conversations are now unlimited for Free and Go users. Instead of using GPT-5.5 Instant, free users will automatically be upgraded to GPT-5.6 Luna as the rollout continues this week. According to OpenAI, the newer model delivers stronger factual accuracy while maintaining the fast responses users expect for everyday questions.
The company is also introducing a new Think button, arriving next week, that allows users to give GPT-5.6 Luna more time to reason through complex questions before generating an answer. Rather than switching to an entirely different model, the feature is designed to provide deeper reasoning only when it’s needed.
OpenAI says this makes ChatGPT easier to use because people won’t need to think about choosing the right model for every conversation. Quick questions can still receive fast responses, while more difficult tasks can benefit from additional reasoning with a single tap.
Unlimited text chats do not mean every ChatGPT feature becomes unrestricted, however. Usage limits will continue to apply to uploads, images, voice features, and other tools available within ChatGPT. The change specifically removes limits for standard text conversations, which remain the most common way people interact with the chatbot.
For many users, this is likely the most meaningful improvement OpenAI has made to the free version of ChatGPT since GPT-5 launched. Whether you’re brainstorming ideas, writing emails, researching a topic, debugging code, or simply asking everyday questions, unlimited text chats remove one of the biggest limitations of the free experience.
GPT-5.6 Sol Becomes Smarter for Plus and Pro Users
Paid subscribers are receiving their own set of improvements through an updated version of GPT-5.6 Sol.
According to OpenAI, the model now provides more focused answers by adapting its level of detail to the question being asked. Instead of producing lengthy responses for simple requests, it aims to deliver concise answers when appropriate while still expanding naturally for more involved tasks like planning, research, writing, or coding.
The company also says GPT-5.6 Sol has become more reliable with facts. Responses that depend on dates, numbers, sources, rules, or assumptions should contain fewer factual mistakes, helping improve accuracy across a wide range of topics.
Another notable change is how the model handles conversations. OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol is less likely to simply agree with incorrect assumptions and will instead offer helpful corrections when necessary. The goal is to make ChatGPT feel more like a thoughtful assistant than one that automatically validates everything a user says.
Plus and Pro users are also getting a new reasoning slider that lets them control how much effort ChatGPT spends on each response. Sliding toward quicker responses keeps answers fast for everyday tasks, while increasing the reasoning level gives the model more time to work through planning, research, writing, coding, and other complex requests.
The slider is available across ChatGPT on the web, desktop, and mobile apps, giving users more control without requiring them to switch between different models.
