How to Book an iPhone Duo Repair or Claim AppleCare+

An iPhone Duo repair starts online with Apple, and from there you can go to a Genius Bar, an Apple Authorized Service Provider or send the phone in by mail. The fee depends on which part broke, and without AppleCare+ it ranges from $49 for the cover layer to $1,499 for damage outside the named parts, with $999 for the inner display.

A few minutes of preparation before you book can save a second trip. Knowing which part is damaged and having a backup ready are the two things worth sorting out first.

Work Out Which iPhone Duo Part Is Damaged and Back the Phone Up

Most parts are priced separately, including the cover layer, outer display, inner display and back glass. The cover layer is the matte nano-textured layer over the inner display, the outer display is the 5.4-inch screen that uses Ceramic Shield 2, and the inner display is the 7.6-inch folding panel. Cracks along the hinge, colored lines and areas that ignore touch all point to the inner display.

Keep the phone closed and use the outer display if the inner display is damaged, and start an iCloud backup or back up to a computer while touch still works. If glass is loose, cover the crack with clear tape, and see what else to do for a cracked iPhone Duo display.

Start the iPhone Duo Repair Online, Then Pick How You Hand It Over

  1. Go to Apple’s iPhone service and repair page and tell Apple what is going on with the phone. You get troubleshooting steps or help arranging a repair or replacement.
  2. Choose how to hand the phone over, either at a Genius Bar or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, where a technician inspects the phone, or by mail with a prepaid box and no appointment.
  3. Sign in with your Apple Account to see your coverage if you have AppleCare.

Apple’s one-year Limited Warranty is for manufacturing issues, so accidental damage and normal battery wear fall outside it. Authorized Service Providers can set their own prices instead of Apple’s, and the final fee is set after the phone is inspected.

If the screen fails in the first days of ownership, an Apple Store is the better start. One owner in Australia reported that Apple first offered an express replacement that needed a hold for the phone’s full value, then exchanged the phone for a new one at the store.

AppleCare+ Cuts the iPhone Duo Inner Display Repair From $999 to $99

AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo costs $19.99 per month, $199.99 per year or $399 upfront. With coverage, the fee depends on the part.

  • Cover layer: $49 without AppleCare+, $19 with it.
  • Back glass: $199 without, $29 with.
  • Outer display: $379 without, $29 with.
  • Inner display: $999 without, $99 with.
  • Other damage: $1,499 without, $99 with.
  • Battery service: $229 without, and $0 with it once capacity falls below 80 percent.

Apple estimates these US iPhone Duo repair fees, and theft or loss costs $149 with AppleCare+. Repairs that involve two parts get a small discount, so the outer display and back glass together cost $509 without coverage.

Do Not Repair the iPhone Duo Yourself or Peel the Cover Layer

Technicians working from the 22-procedure iPhone Duo repair manual use a heated display removal fixture, a display press and a battery press, which is why the job is not one to try at home.

Damage from repairs done outside Apple or its Authorized Service Provider network is not covered by the warranty or AppleCare plans, and it can make the phone ineligible for future Apple repairs. The upfront AppleCare+ plan plus one inner display repair comes to $498, which is $501 below the uncovered $999 fee.
