iOS 27 is now a public release, not a beta build. If you skipped the beta all summer, you can install it today straight from Settings, no sign-up required.
The process itself hasn’t changed much from previous years, but a few things about this specific update are worth knowing before you tap install.
You No Longer Need the Beta Program to Get iOS 27
During the beta period, installing iOS 27 meant enrolling at beta.apple.com and turning on Beta Updates inside Settings. That step is gone now. iOS 27 shows up as a normal update for any eligible iPhone.
If you were on the public beta and had Beta Updates turned on, you can leave it as is. Apple automatically moves beta participants onto the stable release once it ships.
Back Up Your iPhone Before You Do Anything Else
You don’t need to erase your iPhone to install iOS 27, and your apps, photos, and messages stay in place through the update. A backup is still your safety net if something goes wrong mid-install.
- iCloud Backup: Settings, your name, iCloud Backup, then Back Up Now
- Computer backup: connect to a Mac, open Finder, select your iPhone, then Back Up Now
- Have your Apple ID password ready in case you’re asked to verify your account during setup
If you’re still running an earlier iOS 26 build, updating to iOS 26.6 first is worth doing. Apple built indexing changes into that release specifically to smooth the handoff to iOS 27’s new Siri framework.
Free Up At Least 15GB Before You Start
The iOS 27 download itself typically runs 5GB to 9GB, but Apple needs extra room to unpack and install it. Aim for 15GB to 20GB of free space to avoid the install stalling partway through.
Check your available space under Settings, General, iPhone Storage. That screen also flags which apps or files are taking up the most room, so you know what to clear first if you’re short.
If Automatic Updates has a large “Reserved Auto-Update Space” entry sitting on your phone, turning it off under Settings, General, Software Update, Automatic Updates can free up 15GB or more on its own.
Installing iOS 27 Takes About Ten Taps From Settings
- Connect to Wi-Fi and plug your iPhone into power, or make sure it’s above 50 percent battery
- Open Settings
- Tap General
- Tap Software Update
- Wait for iOS 27 to appear on screen
- Tap Download and Install
- Enter your passcode if prompted
- Agree to the terms and conditions
- Let your iPhone restart on its own once installation finishes
If iOS 27 doesn’t show up right away, it usually means Apple hasn’t reached your account or region yet in the rollout. Check again in a few hours.
You Can Also Install It Through Finder on a Mac
Connect your iPhone to your Mac with a cable, open Finder, and select your iPhone from the sidebar. Under the General tab, click Check for Update, then Download and Update once iOS 27 appears.
This method is worth using if your iPhone is low on storage, since the temporary installation files get handled through your Mac instead of eating into your iPhone’s free space.
Most installs land somewhere between 20 and 60 minutes from download to restart, though the exact time depends on your Wi-Fi speed and how much temporary space iOS needs to unpack the update.
