iOS 16.5 bug breaks Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter

Several users have reported that iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 broke connectivity with Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. According to affectees’ complaints on Reddit and Apple Community Forum,  the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter stopped powering their iPhones and iPads after they were updated to the latest software version.

Apple recently released iOS 16.5 and iPadOS 16.5 to everyone. The latest updates feature a dedicated Sports tab in Apple News, a new Pride celebration wallpaper, and several bugfixes for Screen Time, CarPlay, and Spotlight. However, it appears the update released new bugs.

Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter unable to charge iPhone and iPad on iOS 16.5

Compatible with the latest iPhone and iPad models with Lightning port, Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter features a USB-A port for users to quickly transfer photos and videos from their high-resolution digital camera to their iOS and iPadOS devices. Users can also connect other compatible USB accessories like SD, microSD, audio/MIDI interfaces, card readers for CompactFlash, and more, and charge their iPhone or iPad.

After updating their iPhone or iPad to iOS 16.5 or iPadOS 16.5, users cannot charge their devices through the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. @FractalVision420 wrote on Reddit that the adapter worked fine on the older iOS version but not on iOS 16.5.

I use this adapter to run a Dj controller just used it last night. After my 16.5 update it stopped working. Plugged into my gfs phone who hasn’t updated and it worked like normal.Any clue what’s up ?

iOS 16.5 bug

Another affectee, @FIFanatic said that an error message “draws too much power” appeared when the adapter was connected to iPhone running on iOS 16.5.

I am having the exact same issue, only with my digital audio setup – my DAC (Schiit Modi+) worked fine with this adapter connecting my iPhone to it up until I upgraded to iOS 16.5 this morning – now it just gives a “draws too much power” error message and doesn’t even charge my phone anymore, let alone communicate to the DAC.

The user also added that Apple Support was no help and did not have a solution for the problem.

Same issue here. Updated 2 iphones and 1 ipad to ios 16.5 and now neither of them get charged. Surprisingly, apple customer svcs weren’t aware of the issue affecting multiple users, hopefully they are now.

I have an appointment at the apple store to check with them onsite of the problem and to confirm that this is due to the new ios update.

Apple is likely going to fix the issue in an upcoming update. However, if you frequently use the Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter and have updated your iPhone or iPad to the latest update, there is still time to downgrade your device to the previous build. Apple has not stopped signing iOS 16.4.1 and iPadOS 16.4.1.
