Apple has quietly reworked the virtual Apple TV Remote inside iOS 27, and the changes go well beyond a fresh coat of paint. The iOS 27 Release Candidate, which Apple released this week, carries a redesigned Remote interface along with two new features that make controlling an Apple TV 4K from an iPhone noticeably faster.
The most useful addition is a new button sitting in the top right corner of the Remote screen, marked with a four square glyph. Tapping it pops open an app launcher that mirrors the layout of the actual Apple TV home screen, letting you jump straight into an app without picking up the physical Siri Remote or reaching for the television at all. For anyone who juggles several streaming apps in a single evening, this alone removes one of the more annoying steps in the current Apple TV workflow.
The second change lives inside the trackpad area that iPhone owners already use to navigate the Apple TV interface. Swiping down from the top of that trackpad now reveals the Top Shelf carousel, the same rotating strip of artwork that normally appears at the top of the Apple TV home screen. It surfaces shows from your watchlist along with anything you have already started, so you can resume a series without navigating back through menus on the television itself.
Both features are currently sitting behind feature flags in the iOS 27 Release Candidate, which typically means Apple is still testing them internally before flipping the switch for everyone. They were first spotted by MacRumors and independently confirmed through code digging by the developer known as “pdfu,” who also shared a preview of the new interface on social media.

A Possible Preview of the Next Apple TV Hardware
The timing of these Remote app changes is worth paying attention to. Code found earlier in macOS 26.7 pointed to an upgraded Siri Remote arriving alongside the next generation Apple TV 4K, though Apple has not confirmed what that hardware refresh will actually include. It is entirely possible these two software features are laying the groundwork for whatever the physical remote ends up doing differently, though that connection remains speculation for now. A new Apple TV 4K is expected to be unveiled later this month or in October, so the picture should become clearer soon.
The Remote App Returns to the Home Screen
Alongside the two headline features, iOS 27 also fixes a smaller but genuinely annoying limitation. The virtual Apple TV Remote can once again be placed directly on the iPhone Home Screen, rather than being locked away inside Control Center as it has been in recent versions of iOS. Anyone running the iOS 27 beta can find it immediately by swiping down on the Home Screen and searching for “remote.”
When You Will Get These Features
Apple has already confirmed that iOS 27 will roll out to all compatible iPhone models on Monday, September 14. Since both the app launcher and the Top Shelf carousel are still hidden behind feature flags in the Release Candidate, there is a real chance Apple holds them back for a slightly later point release rather than shipping them in the initial iOS 27 launch. Either way, the redesigned Remote interface itself should be visible to everyone from day one.
