iPad Pro to get OLED displays in late 2021, after mini-LED in early 2021

A new report claims that Apple will release iPad Pro with a mini-LED display in early 2021, but will release iPad Pro with OLED displays in the second half of 2021. This is the first time that we have heard reports of Apple putting OLED displays on iPad, something that it has avoided doing for a long time.

iPad Pro to switch to OLED displays after mini-LED

Apple has been using OLED displays in Apple Watch and iPhones for a long time now, but there have always been rumors that the company will jump straight to mini-LED for iPad. Korean website The Elec claims that Apple still plans to release a 12.9-inch iPad Pro in the first half of 2021, however, it will follow up with an OLED display-based iPad Pro in the second half of 2021.

The Elec has provided reliable rumors in the past, especially with LiDAR support in iPad Pro, however, this one is a little difficult to understand. It was considered that Apple will move to mini-LED with just one iPad Pro model, and introduce it to other models and MacBooks over time, but moving to OLED displays just does not make sense.

As per The Elec, both Samsung Display and LG Display will be providing the OLED displays for iPad Pro, the same companies that also supply OLED panels for iPhones.

As the 2020 iPad Pro refresh was below average, with just an additional camera, LiDAR support, and A12z processor with an additional GPU core over the A12x, all eyes are on the next iPad Pro refresh which is expected to ship with the new min-LED display and 5G networking. mini-LED is supposed to give many of the benefits that OLED provides, such as increased contrast ratios, local dimming, and improvement to power efficiency.

Here are all the reports and rumors that we have previously covered which confirm the launch of a mini-LED iPad Pro, with 5G networking and A14 chip, in early 2021:
