Today, Snapchat has announced a new feature called Spotlight. The new section in the app will house the most entertaining snaps on the platform in one place. In addition, the social media platform has also announced a $1 million reward to share among creators to encourage them to submit their videos to Spotlight. Currently, Spotlight is launching in select regions to iOS and Android devices.
The new feature is similar to TikTok’s format where the creator share videos to gain a following. TikTok is a very popular Chinese social media app that allows creators to upload various types of videos, and earn through it. Therefore, it is not surprising that Snapchat is copying TikTok like other apps to attract creators and increase engagement. Recently, Snapchat introduced a new feature in the app which allows users to add music to their videos.
Snapchat launches Spotlight – A TikTok like Feature
The social media company explained that to ensure safety and positivity on the platform, videos uploaded to Spotlight will be moderated and users will not be allowed public comments. The announcement states,
“Spotlight shines a light on the most entertaining Snaps created by the Snapchat community, no matter who created them. We built Spotlight to be a place where anyone’s content can take center stage – without needing a public account or an influencer following. It’s a fair and fun place for Snapchatters to share their best Snaps and see perspectives from across the Snapchat community.”
Anyone with a private or public account can submit their snaps to Spotlight. The app’s ranking algorithm will select and award the most popular videos based on viewers’ interest “in a particular Snap, like the amount of time spent watching it, if it is favorited, and if it’s shared with friends. It also considers negative factors, including if the viewer skipped watching the Snap quickly.”
However, creators must be 16 years or older to earn money via Spotlight and they are asked to comply with the app’s content guidelines and terms. Spotlight is launching in the United States, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France, New Zealand and Australia. More countries will be added soon.
Snapchat is available on iOS and Android devices for free and can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play respectively.
