Apple has increased iPhone 12 production by 20% to 30% for 2021, because of high demand across the globe. iPhone 12 was released with 5G networking and a brand new design, which are likely contributors to its increased demand.
The company is looking at a 30% year-on-year increase in the first half of 2021 and expects to produce 96 million iPhones. It is still selling some older iPhone 11 and iPhone SE models as well, which add to the high demand. Apple launched a total of five new iPhone variants this year, including iPhone SE and four variants of iPhone 12.

Nikkei reports that Apple is looking to build up to 230 million iPhones in 2021, which includes all the old and new models that are currently on sale. However, this is not a definite figure and could change over the next year as demand changes.
Apple plans to produce up to 96 million iPhones for the first half of 2021, a nearly 30% year-on-year increase, after demand for its first-ever 5G handsets surged amid the pandemic, Nikkei Asia learned.
The Cupertino-based tech giant has asked suppliers to build some 95 million to 96 million iPhones, including the latest iPhone 12 range and the older iPhone 11 and iPhone SE, multiple people familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia — though industrywide shortages of key components could threaten that target.
The tentative full-year forecast that Apple shared with its suppliers suggests it plans to build up to 230 million iPhones in 2021, including both old and new models, the people said. This would mark a 20% rise from 2019, though the target will be regularly reviewed and revised in response to any changes in consumer demand, they added.
The report by Nikkei also breaks down the demand for the new iPhone 12 models. iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are the best selling models, thanks to their features, and bump in base storage capacities, while iPhone 12 demand is as per expectations. iPhone 12 mini demand has been slow, which we had reported before as well.
All eyes are now on iPhone 13’s leaks and rumors which is expected to launch in September 2021, with the same four models that iPhone 12 launched with.
