Mark Gurman has reported that Apple’s iPhone Ultra will ship with MagSafe and launch alongside or within weeks of the iPhone 18 Pro models on September 9, according to a Tom’s Guide interview with Mark Gurman. The Bloomberg reporter also detailed iOS 27 multitasking features built specifically for the foldable’s expanded display, clarified the durability of its hinge compared to Samsung’s latest foldables, and reiterated a starting price of $2,000 or higher.
MagSafe Is Confirmed for the Foldable iPhone
The iPhone Ultra is expected to include MagSafe, resolving one of the few remaining uncertainties about the device. Gurman stated that
“All indications that I’ve heard is that MagSafe is in for this foldable phone. They were able to get it into the iPhone Air, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to get it into the foldable.”
Dummy units of the iPhone Ultra that surfaced in April lacked the characteristic MagSafe ring, which had left the question open despite MagSafe appearing on iPhone 18 Pro dummies.
The Crease Is Still There, but Comparable to Samsung
Apple has not eliminated the display crease that appears when the foldable iPhone is fully opened. Gurman said the crease remains visible but is on par with Samsung’s latest foldable designs and may even be superior thanks to Apple’s more durable hinge. Durability itself has been a central engineering focus for Apple; the company spent considerable time ensuring the iPhone Ultra meets the same ruggedness standard as any other iPhone despite its 4.5mm thickness when unfolded.
iOS 27 Brings iPad-Style Multitasking to iPhone Ultra
Apple’s iOS 27 will enable split-screen app layouts and side-by-side multitasking on the foldable’s large 7.8-inch inner display. Gurman added a detail not previously reported: drag and drop will work between multiple on-screen apps, allowing users to quickly move data from one application to another without switching contexts. This feature set is one of the clearest differentiators between the iPhone Ultra and standard iPhones.
Launch Timing: Same Day or Within Weeks, Not Months
The iPhone Ultra is expected to launch on the same date as the iPhone 18 Pro or within weeks afterward, not in late October, November, or 2027. Gurman stated he would be “very surprised” if the foldable did not hit those windows, directly contradicting months of speculation about potential production delays.
“Either on the same launch date, a dual launch, or coming out within weeks later. This idea of a late October, November launch, massive delays, supply chain issues, I don’t believe to be the case.”
Pricing Locked at $2,000 and Up
The iPhone Ultra will start at $2,000 or higher, placing it as a premium device well above the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Gurman reiterated this figure, which he has reported consistently for months.
One week before Apple’s September 9 reveal, Gurman’s interview settles the largest remaining questions about the foldable. The MagSafe confirmation and hinge durability details in particular show the engineering complexity packed into a device thinner than any iPhone to date.
