Google, Oppo, and Vivo will all adopt dual ultra-thin glass (UTG) structures for their next-generation foldable phones, following the same display technology approach Apple pioneered for the iPhone Ultra.
According to The Elec, Samsung Display is producing dual-UTG OLED prototypes tailored to each company’s specifications, with mass production timed for early 2027. Oppo and Vivo are expected to launch in the first half, while Google’s foldable is expected to arrive in the second half, likely in August.
How the dual-glass structure reduces creasing
The dual-UTG design places one layer of ultra-thin glass above the OLED panel and a second layer underneath it. The upper glass sheet protects the screen from external impact and scratches while withstanding repeated folding. The lower layer disperses stress concentrated around the hinge during opening and closing, reinforcing panel rigidity and reducing the visible crease at the screen’s center.
By adjusting the physical properties of both laminated layers together, manufacturers control how the panel flexes during folding and deformation over time. Apple adopted this approach for the iPhone Ultra, and the three Android makers have now decided it delivers better durability and crease reduction than single-layer alternatives. This convergence shows competitors are validating Apple’s engineering priorities around durability and screen quality by implementing the same dual-layer glass structure.
Samsung Display’s production timeline and supply chain
Samsung Display is evaluating performance and validating mass-production processes based on each customer’s product structure, thickness, and durability specifications. Dowoo Insys, Samsung Display’s UTG partner, will supply both the upper and lower glass layers, which Samsung Display will then incorporate into OLED panels for delivery to Google, Oppo, and Vivo.
Launch windows are staggered across 2027: Oppo will release in the first half, Vivo will also release in the first half, and Google in the second half, likely August based on typical release timing.

Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses a single UTG layer above the display, with a titanium alloy film and reinforced titanium plate positioned beneath the OLED panel instead. This approach avoids the complexity and cost of a second glass layer while still managing durability and creasing through improved materials and hinge design.
The single upper-UTG structure has already achieved stable mass production and reduces bonding processes, additional costs, and manufacturing yield risks compared to dual-layer glass. However, Oppo and Vivo have positioned crease reduction as a key competitive differentiator, making the dual-UTG investment worthwhile for those products.
The UTG supply chain
Doubling the number of UTG sheets per device, from one to two, boosts glass suppliers even if overall foldable smartphone shipments remain flat. Samsung Display and Dowoo Insys will benefit from the higher volume, and the shift validates ultra-thin glass as the dominant material for foldable displays across the premium segment heading into 2027.
This convergence around dual-UTG reflects Apple’s advantage in entering the foldable market after five years of Samsung’s creasing challenges. By learning from competitors’ mistakes and optimizing for durability and screen quality rather than speed to market, Apple has effectively set the engineering standard that the industry is now following.
