The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

I tried that Stace, and then it just got stuck on the waiting for ipod screen, and now my ipod is stuck on the screen where it says plug in to itunes and I can’t restore.
Actually now I can get it all done but it says all done wait for reboot and I wait but nothing happens, and i reboot manually by pressing home and lock button for 20 secs and it restarts like regular. I just can’t get the black ra1n app onto ipod..
how did you get it off the plug into itunes screen?? im stuck there
i figured out a way to get past that restore screen all u have to do is go to black ra1n and jailbreak from there and wat the jailbreak will do is hack that and just jailbreak it
My i just ran the balick ra1n and it worked and everyhting but now my ipod won’t turn bakc on and it wonrt even show up on itunes any suggestions on what to do??
go on itunes and click restore and if the ipod turns back on click uninstall
but if you do restore it in itunes, doesn’t that erase all your apps and everything on the ipod?
i think you have to plug your itouch in to itunes and click some button.

You should wait until there is an unlock available for the iPhone 3GS firmware 3.1.2.

Try the process again. Are you able to boot your iPod ? Do a recover using iTunes and try again.
If you are already using 3.1.2, just connect your iPod, run the blackra1n app and let it do its work. It should work smoothly. I jailbroke my iPod Touch in the first go with blackra1n. You don't need purplera1n for this.

Reading other forums I have read that u need to have some tool called pwnage tool/redsnow to unlock those firmwares on 3.1.2 but its not released yet. I have got the firmware 3.0.1 and I am wondering whether I have to use this blackra1n hack.
If you want to unlock your iPhone, you should use Ultrasnow. But it won't work if you upgrade to 3.1.2 firmware and could cause issues down the road when unlocking since the baseband would be upgraded. You should wait for an updated version of Ultrasnow.

I downloaded blackra1n then cydia and through cydia downloaded blacksnow to unlock my original iphone and it went black but hasnt rebooted and its been 48 hours!

You'll have to wait for an unlock tool because currently none works with iPhone firmware 3.1.2
