The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

I don´t get it, first you warn “do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes ” and after that, in the instructions you say “Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes”.
my phone it´s like new, never jailbreak, just upgraded to 3.1.2 using itunes. Can I jailbreak with this method?

i have been trying to do this but i need major help.. i have an itouch software 3.1.2 (im not sure which gen my itouch is but its 8gig with external volume control), itunes 9, windows vista but i changed the compatibility thing. so when i try to run the blackra1n with itouch plugged in it says “restoring” but then it opens itunes and forces me to do an itunes restore, at the end of that restore blackra1n says “Done!!” but i dont have the app on my itouch and my itouch never shows a picture of geohot… Any help will be greatly appreciated and i can be contacted at Blazejunk@yahoo.com..

Can anyone help?? Everything works fine. However, when it says “wait for reboot”, the picture goes off the screen, the ipod turns off, then does NOTHING. What do I do???

no, everything stays. as long as your ipod is backed up on your computer, even if all hell breaks loose on your ipod, you can restore it. bottom line, nothing is deleted.
Does it work with the ipod 3g firmwire3.1.1 out of the box?
I updated my new ipod touch to 3.1.2 via itunes. I restored the firmware and ran blackra1n but I did not see any blackra1n icon after the ipod rebooted. Do I have to be connected to the internet via wi-fi for this process? Please help. Thanks
That upgrade is for iPod Touch. Do not upgrade is for iPhone users.
Itunes shouldn't be running when with blackra1n running. You should try restoring your ipod touch firmware to the default 3.1.2 without running blackra1n and then try the jailbreak again.
Try a restore via iTunes and repeat the process again.
It should work because according to George who created this tool, it works for all the iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Let me know how it goes for you.

It should work. But why not upgrade to the latest one i.e. 3.1.2 and then jailbreak?
Some people have been reporting this issue. You could try restoring the firmware and try blackra1n again. It worked for me in the first try while I wrote this guide. I had wi-fi disabled by the way.
