The new MacBook Air with M2 chip will be available for order from Friday, July 8, 5 am PDT, while shipping and in-store availability will start from Friday, July 15. The new MacBook Air with M2 starts from $1,199 for the base model and $1,099 for education customers.
M2 MacBook Air to start shipping in mid-July
It was previously rumored that the new MacBook Air will be available for order on July 8, and the rumors were right on the money.
The new 2022 MacBook Air features a major design refresh with thinner display bezels and four finishes including new midnight and starlight. a MagSafe charging port, and two Thunderbolt ports alongside a 3.5mm headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones.
The MacBook Air also features a four-speaker system, three-mic array, and 1080p FaceTime HD camera, which makes it perfectly suitable for remote work and studying, which is common nowadays.
The display is also improved, with rounded edges, and 500 nits of brightness.
The M2 chip features an 8-core CPU and up to 10-core GPU, with support for 100GB/s unified memory bandwidth and up to 24GB memory. A new media engine also ensures that ProRes video encode and decode is hardware-accelerated, allowing playback of multiple 4K and 8K video streams.
Apple claims that the M2 chip provides 18% improved CPU performance and 35% GPU performance over the M1 chip, while benchmarks have revealed the actual difference in Geekbench comparison seems to be even higher. Despite the improvements, the M2 MacBook Air still delivers up to 18 hours of video playback or 15 hours of wireless web browsing. The new MacBook Air also supports fast charging, allowing it to charge up to 50% in just 30 minutes when used with a 67W USB-C power adapter.
The MacBook Air base model ships with 256GB SSD storage, and 8GB unified memory. It can be configured with up to 2TB SSD storage, and 24GB unified memory.
