Apple’s Liquid Glass redesign has been one of the most talked-about changes in iOS. While some users love its layered, translucent look, others find it distracting or harder to read. The good news is that you don’t have to live with the default appearance.
Although you can’t turn Liquid Glass off completely, Apple gives you several ways to reduce its visual intensity in iOS 27 without changing how your iPhone works. Start with the Liquid Glass slider, and if it does not go far enough, Reduce Transparency is the single most effective setting.
The Liquid Glass Slider in Appearance Settings Controls How Transparent iOS 27 Looks
The biggest improvement in iOS 27 is a dedicated Liquid Glass slider that lets you fine-tune the transparency effect instead of choosing between preset styles.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Appearance.
- Select Liquid Glass.
- Drag the slider toward clear for a more transparent look, or toward tinted for a more opaque appearance.
Unlike previous versions of iOS, you can now choose the exact balance that looks best to you. On an iPhone still running iOS 26.1 or later, the same setting is a choice between Clear and Tinted under Settings > Display & Brightness > Liquid Glass.
If you turned on Reduce Transparency or Increase Contrast in Accessibility settings, you need to turn them off before the slider will change the look of Liquid Glass.
Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast Replace Glass With Solid Backgrounds
If menus, Control Center, or notifications are difficult to read, Reduce Transparency makes one of the biggest differences. This Accessibility setting replaces many translucent interface elements with more solid backgrounds, making text and icons much easier to distinguish.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
- Turn on Reduce Transparency.
Increase Contrast sits on the same screen and sharpens the boundaries between buttons, text, and whatever sits behind them. Turn on both for the most solid, readable result, and keep in mind that either one disables the Liquid Glass slider until you turn it off again.
Bright Effects, Home Screen Icons and Motion Settings Calm the Rest of the Look
Some of Liquid Glass’s lighting effects can make the interface feel overly reflective, especially against colorful wallpapers. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and enable Reduce Bright Effects. The difference is subtle, but it helps reduce glare and improves contrast throughout the system.

The way your icons look also affects how noticeable Liquid Glass feels. Press and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit, choose Customize, and experiment with Tinted, Dark, or larger icons. Many users find that tinted or dark icons create better contrast and make the overall interface easier to read than the default clear style.
Liquid Glass also includes subtle animations that create a sense of depth, such as its fluid morphing effects. If those feel distracting, open Settings > Accessibility > Motion and turn on Reduce Motion. Animations become less pronounced while navigation remains smooth, helping the interface feel calmer and more consistent.
