WhatsApp has officially launched voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web, bringing both one-on-one and group calls to the browser with no app download required. The rollout began today, and will reach all users gradually over the coming days. This follows WhatsApp’s earlier expansion of voice and video calls on Mac and Windows, completing a broader push to bring full call functionality across every platform WhatsApp supports.
The feature has been in development for roughly a year, moving from a limited one-on-one beta in February 2026 to group call testing for some users in June. The rollout also includes Call Transfer, which lets users move an active call between their phone, tablet, desktop app, or browser without hanging up or asking the other party to rejoin.
What’s included
Web calling on WhatsApp is expected to ship with a feature set that matches what most users expect from the desktop apps:
- Voice and video calls, both 1:1 and group, supporting up to 32 participants
- End-to-end encryption on all calls, no time limits, and no cost
- Screen sharing, reactions, and full call history in the browser
- Noise suppression, adjustable from in-call settings
- QuickHD, which delivers high-definition video in the first few seconds of a call rather than waiting for the connection to settle
- Call links with unique secure URLs that expire automatically after 30 days of inactivity, plus waiting room support for those links
Call Transfer is the practical standout
QuickHD and noise suppression are incremental improvements, but Call Transfer solves a real frustration. Moving from a desk to another room, or switching from a browser session to your phone on the way out the door, no longer means dropping the call and re-dialing. WhatsApp handles the handoff in the background and the other participants see nothing change. It sits alongside recent platform expansions like iPad sign-up and revamped CarPlay as evidence that WhatsApp is closing gaps across its entire device lineup at pace.
Web calling on WhatsApp Web is a straightforward catch-up to what Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and even X’s browser-based calling have offered for some time. What differentiates it is Call Transfer and the encryption that applies automatically, with no configuration required in corporate or shared environments. For a messaging platform with WhatsApp’s user base, shipping that combination through the browser rather than an installable app is a meaningful simplification for a large number of people.
