OLED iMac Panels Could Use a Five-Layer Stack to Beat Burn-In

LG Display is developing a five-layer OLED panel structure specifically to address burn-in and brightness concerns for a future iMac, with the panel targeting 600 nits brightness at 218 PPI on a 24-inch display. Both LG Display and Samsung Display are targeting 2028 to have the first iMac OLED panels developed, which puts an actual iMac launch at 2029 at the earliest, according to a report from The Elec.

Apple has been rolling out OLED across its product lineup for several years, starting with iPhone and extending to OLED panels for iPad, but the iMac has remained on LCD. The scale and static-use demands of a desktop display make the engineering problem considerably more complex than it was for smaller devices.

Why Five Layers Instead of Four

LG Display’s current tandem OLED panels use a four-stack structure with emitting layers arranged in a blue-green-blue-red pattern. The new design adds a third blue layer to create a blue-green-blue-red-blue arrangement. The reason for the extra layer comes down to physics: stacking more emitting layers spreads the electrical load across a larger area, which matters considerably at high pixel densities where individual pixels shrink and each one has to work harder to maintain brightness. Pushing more current through smaller emitters shortens panel lifespan and increases the likelihood of image retention, so the extra layer is a durability requirement for desktop use rather than a premium addition.

Image retention is a more serious concern on a desktop computer than on a phone or tablet, because iMac users are far more likely to leave static elements like a menu bar or Dock in the same position for hours at a time. A phone screen rotates, dims quickly, and gets replaced every few years; a desktop display does not. Apple’s OLED displays are engineered to cover a wide color gamut, and that ambition only raises the bar for lifespan and consistency at the desktop scale.

Two Suppliers, Two Approaches

Samsung Display is pursuing a different solution to the same problem, developing QD-OLED technology for the iMac panel. Apple sent requests for information to both companies last year, effectively setting them on parallel development tracks. LG Display has already demonstrated a 27-inch 5K panel at 220 PPI using an RGB stripe subpixel layout, which functions as a manufacturing test to gauge whether it can produce high-density RGB stripe OLED panels in volume.

The five-layer approach carries a cost penalty. More emitting layers mean more organic material and a more complex deposition process, and LG Display still has to meet Apple’s brightness and lifespan targets without degrading manufacturing yields. That tension between performance targets and production economics is a significant part of why the timeline stretches as long as it does.

What Is Actually Coming to iMac in 2026

Apple is expected to refresh the current 24-inch LCD-based iMac with a new processor later this year as part of Apple’s 2026 Mac roadmap, keeping the existing display technology intact. The 24-inch iMac with M3 manages 500 nits at the same 218 PPI density that LG Display is targeting for the OLED version, so the brightness gap between today’s LCD and the planned OLED panel is a relatively modest 100 nits. The more significant upgrade will be image quality characteristics that LCD cannot match: contrast, true blacks, and per-pixel dimming.

The iMac is the last major Apple product category still relying on LCD, and the complexity of what LG Display and Samsung Display are working on makes clear why Apple has not rushed the transition. Getting OLED right on a 24-inch desktop panel used eight hours a day is a harder problem than doing it on a phone, and a 2029 launch, while distant, starts to look realistic rather than pessimistic.
