Tab Suspender for Safari now runs on iPhone and iPad as well as the Mac, and the developer says it frees up to 60 percent of the memory held by tabs you are not using. Premium adds Deep sleep, which keeps tabs asleep even after you quit Safari.
Safari keeps every open tab running, which uses memory. Tab Suspender puts a tab to sleep after an idle time you choose, and tapping the tab brings the page back at the same scroll position. The app is free, and Premium is an in-app purchase.
Tab Suspender for Safari sleeps tabs on a timer or when you say so
You pick the idle time, anywhere from one minute to eight hours. You can also sleep the current tab, sleep every other tab or wake all tabs at once, and Mac users get keyboard shortcuts for those actions.
A sleeping tab runs no scripts, timers or video, and it keeps its address, title and icon. It also shows roughly how much memory it freed. The tab you are looking at, tabs you are typing in, tabs playing audio and pinned tabs always stay awake.
Back still works on a sleeping tab, and sleeping tabs sync through iCloud Tabs like any other tab. Apple’s own tab changes this fall arrange your tabs, with auto-organized topics in iOS 27 and Safari vertical tabs in the iOS 27.3 beta. Tab Suspender is aimed at the memory your open tabs use.
Deep sleep and the other Premium features start at $1.99 a month
Deep sleep frees more memory than normal sleep by parking a tab on a blank page, and the tab stays asleep after you quit Safari. The original address stays in your browser. The app has no ads and no account.
Premium adds four more features on top of Deep sleep:
- Daily statistics on tabs slept and memory freed
- Never-suspend lists for sites that should stay awake
- A blurred screenshot of the page behind each sleeping tab
- Waking a tab as soon as you open it, or keeping all tabs awake while your device is plugged in
Premium costs $1.99 a month, $9.99 a year or $29.99 once. People who bought the original Tab Suspender can restore Premium with Restore Purchases.
Tab Suspender for Safari needs an M1 Mac, iOS 17 or iPadOS 17
On iPhone you need iOS 17.0 or later, and on iPad you need iPadOS 17.0 or later. On the Mac you need macOS 14.0 and an Apple M1 chip or later, so Intel Macs cannot run it. The app also supports Apple Vision on visionOS 1.0 or later.
The app supports English and 16 other languages, including Arabic, Japanese and Spanish. The developer, Portus Pro, reports that it collects a device ID, product usage and performance data for analytics, none of it linked to you.
