iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate add a Safari feature that organizes your open tabs by topic automatically. Safari already let you arrange tabs by title or by website, but this goes a step further and detects when tabs belong together, so several Apple news pages end up under a single Apple Updates topic.
Automatic Tab Organization Needs an iPhone 15 Pro or Newer
The feature relies on Apple Intelligence, which is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later running iOS 27, and Apple Intelligence is not available in every language or region.
Topics are not the same as Tab Groups, which still work the way they always have. During the iOS 27 beta, the option only appeared in the first tab group of a Safari profile, and turning it on in one profile turned it on in all of them, so check whether that still applies on your iPhone.
How to Turn On Automatic Tab Organization on iPhone
- Open Safari and tap the Tabs button.
- Tap the Organize icon in the top left, next to the search open tabs icon.
- Tap Organize Tabs, then tap Automatically Create Topics.
The menu has two options on iPhone, Automatically Create Topics and Never. On iPadOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate there is a third one called Show Related Tabs, which is covered below.
Safari Groups Related Tabs Into Named Topics
Once the option is on, Safari detects the topics of your open tabs and creates folders in the tab switcher with a relevant name. When two or more tabs fit together, such as news pages, a suggested topic appears with the related tabs grouped as thumbnails.
Tap a topic to see all of its tabs, and tap the Back button to close the topic again. Inside a topic, the More button lets you move the tabs to a Tab Group, close all of them, or tell Apple whether the grouping looks right with Looks Good or Something Isn’t Right. You can also drag and drop tabs in and out of a topic from the tab switcher.
iPad and Mac Add a Show Related Tabs Option
On iPadOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate, Show Related Tabs lets you group tabs manually into topics that Safari recommends. Safari suggests the topics and you decide whether to group them. On a Mac you can find the setting by choosing Safari > Settings and setting Organize Tabs to either option.
The iPad and Mac designs can make it hard to tell what to tap or click for a given action.
