iPadOS 27 quietly solves some of the iPad’s biggest frustrations

Apple has officially unveiled iPadOS 27 at WWDC 2026, and while it may not be the most dramatic iPad update in recent years, it could end up being one of the most useful. Instead of chasing major redesigns after last year’s productivity-focused release, Apple is refining the iPad experience with a smarter Siri, meaningful performance upgrades, and a collection of features that address long-standing annoyances.

The update centers around Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, but many of the biggest improvements are the small quality-of-life upgrades that make the iPad feel faster, more capable, and easier to use every day.

Siri AI finally becomes useful

The headline feature in iPadOS 27 is Siri AI, Apple’s redesigned assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. Siri can now hold natural conversations, understand personal context, search across your apps, and complete actions on your behalf.

Users can ask Siri to find old photos, locate information buried in emails, pull details from notes, create reminders, manage calendar events, and perform actions across supported apps. Apple is also introducing a dedicated Siri app that keeps conversations synced across devices, allowing users to start a conversation on iPhone and continue it on iPad or Mac.

Siri AI can also generate drafts, rewrite text, provide writing feedback, and answer questions using information from the web when needed.

Visual Intelligence comes to iPad

Apple is bringing Visual Intelligence to iPadOS 27 as part of the Siri AI experience. Users can take a screenshot and either tap or circle objects with Apple Pencil to learn more about them, search for similar products, or perform related actions.

This makes the iPad a much more useful research tool, especially for students, professionals, and creators who frequently work with documents, images, and web content.

Productivity improvements that make a difference

The Menu Bar can now remain permanently visible, making navigation quicker when working with multiple apps. Users can also resize iPhone apps running on iPad, while the active app name now appears in the status bar for better multitasking awareness.

The Shortcuts app is becoming easier to use thanks to natural language creation. Instead of building complex workflows manually, users can simply describe what they want to automate and let the system build the shortcut.

Safari is also getting smarter. It can automatically organize tabs into categories, helping users manage research projects, shopping sessions, and large collections of open tabs more easily. A new Notify Me feature can monitor webpages for changes such as price drops or product restocks.

Faster performance across the system

According to Apple, browsing and transferring files between an iPad and external storage can be up to five times faster. App launches, AirDrop transfers, and overall system responsiveness have also been improved.

An optimized CPU scheduler and smoother transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular connections should help iPads feel faster during everyday use without requiring new hardware.

Liquid Glass is also receiving refinements, including improved readability, sharper icons, and a new customization slider that lets users adjust transparency levels from highly transparent to more tinted appearances.

Photos and Apple Intelligence get smarter

Spatial Reframing allows users to adjust the perspective of a photo after it has been captured, while the new Extend feature can intelligently expand an image beyond its original borders. Apple has also upgraded the Clean Up tool to remove unwanted objects more effectively.

Shared Albums are becoming more useful too, with support for Android and Windows users, full-resolution sharing, improved filtering options, and additional reactions.

Expanded child safety controls

Parents can now choose exactly which apps are available during device setup, approve website requests through a new Ask to Browse feature, and manage more flexible Screen Time schedules. Communication Safety has also expanded to help protect children from sensitive content, including violence and gore in shared images and videos.

iOS 27 Children messages approval

The redesigned parental controls interface makes it easier for guardians to monitor usage and make adjustments when needed.

More upgrades coming to iPadOS 27

Apple is also adding enhanced Flyover views in Maps, AirPods Custom EQ settings, faster Messages syncing, smarter Home app notifications powered by Apple Intelligence, customizable Photos slideshows, and accessibility improvements such as automatic subtitles and richer VoiceOver descriptions.

iPadOS 27 is available in developer beta starting today, with a public beta arriving in July. Apple plans to release the final version this fall.
