Tesla Chief Designer on Apple products: “there’s nothing to look forward to”

Tesla’s Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen has gone on record to say that “there’s nothing to look forward to” when it comes to Apple products, and they are just “slight refinements on the same thing”.

Tesla Designer does not think Apple’s products are inspirational anymore

Holzhausen said this during an appearance on the podcast Spike’s Car Radio with Spike Feresten, where he talked down Apple products.

The sad part about Apple products now, there’s nothing to look forward to. I feel like it’s a continuation, it’s just a slight refinement on the same thing. Inspirationally, it’s been hard to get super motivated by what they’re doing.

He also went on to say that he wears an Apple Watch only because of its fitness feature, but otherwise, he does not find it useful.

Check out the snippet from the podcast where Franz von Holzhausen talks about Apple and his lack of enthusiasm towards them.

Holzhausen’s lack of enthusiasm towards Apple products would find lots of people who agree with him, however, it is rather astonishing when it comes from Tesla’s Chief Designer.

Tesla is popularly known for re-using the same design for ages on its vehicles like Model S, Model X, and Model 3, and only introduces minor refinements with newer releases. Customers don’t really expect massive design changes with any new updates to Tesla’s cars, and it is understandable as there is no need to change what is not broken.

However, the same applies to Apple products as well. The company takes time to refine a new product design after introducing it, and only changes it when it can make meaningful advancements towards material sciences, durability, improved performance, or battery life. Apple rarely makes a design change just for the sake of change.

It might be possible that Holzhausen’s comments against Apple are the result of reports that the Cupertino giant is preparing to enter the electric vehicle market. Perhaps, the rumored Apple Car is a concern in the back of the mind of Tesla employees?
