How to Turn Off Animated Emojis, Stickers, and GIFs in WhatsApp on iPhone

Animated emojis, stickers, and GIFs can make WhatsApp conversations feel more lively, but not everyone enjoys the extra motion. If you prefer a cleaner chat experience or simply find animations distracting, WhatsApp now lets you turn them off individually on iPhone.

The feature is built directly into WhatsApp, so you don’t need to change any iPhone accessibility settings or disable animations system-wide. Instead, you can choose exactly which types of animated content you want to stop from playing automatically while continuing to use the app normally.

Your changes take effect immediately, so you don’t need to restart the app.

What Happens When You Disable Animations?

Turning off these settings only affects how animated content is displayed inside WhatsApp chats.

For example:

  • Animated emojis will no longer play their motion effects.
  • Animated stickers will appear without their animations.
  • GIFs won’t automatically animate while you’re viewing a conversation.

The feature is purely a visual preference. It does not change how messages are sent or received, and your contacts can continue sending animated content as usual.

What Doesn’t Change

Disabling animations won’t affect other WhatsApp features, including:

  • Text messages
  • Photos and videos
  • Voice messages
  • Calls
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Message delivery
  • Chat backups

Only the playback of supported animated content is affected.

Can’t Find the Animations Option?

If you don’t see Settings > Chats > Animations, the feature may not be available on your account yet.

WhatsApp is rolling out the new animation controls gradually, which means some users may receive them before others. Even if you’re using the latest version of the app, the menu may not appear immediately.

Start by updating WhatsApp from the App Store. If the option is still missing, you’ll likely need to wait until the feature is enabled for your account through a future update.
