Apple has released tvOS 27 to the public, bringing the software to Apple TV 4K owners as part of the company’s coordinated fall software rollout. The update arrives alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27, all of which became available today, September 14, 2026.
tvOS 27 spent the summer moving through developer and public betas following its debut at WWDC26 in June, and the final build closely matches what testers saw in the release candidate. Apple is treating this as one of its smaller yearly updates, with most of the attention this cycle going to Siri AI on other platforms instead.
tvOS 27 Only Installs on Apple TV 4K (2nd Generation) and Apple TV 4K (3rd Generation)
For the first time, Apple has drawn a hard line on tvOS hardware support. The Apple TV HD from 2015 and the Apple TV 4K (1st Generation) from 2017 do not qualify for tvOS 27 and will stay on tvOS 26.
That cutoff lines up with reports of new Apple TV hardware arriving later this year, built around a chip powerful enough to run Siri AI locally.
The Podcasts App Now Supports Video Podcasts
tvOS 27 ships a redesigned Podcasts app that plays video podcasts for the first time on Apple TV, not just audio. The app is organized into dedicated sections for Apple TV, Apple Music, and other content types, making it easier to browse without digging through menus.
Apple Music Adds Hi-Res Lossless Audio on Apple TV
Apple Music on Apple TV 4K gets Hi-Res Lossless playback for the first time with tvOS 27. The update also adds AutoMix and Crossfade transitions between songs, matching features that have been available on iPhone and Mac for longer.

Siri AI Still Isn’t Coming to Apple TV
tvOS 27 does not include Siri AI, the more conversational version of Siri that Apple is rolling out across iPhone, iPad, and Mac this week. Apple TV’s current hardware, built around the A15 Bionic chip, isn’t capable of running it.
That gap is expected to close with new Apple TV hardware rumored for later this fall, which is said to bring a faster processor built specifically to support Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features.
