Apple has removed the paid developer program requirement for beta testing, allowing anyone with a free Apple developer account to install the beta directly on their Apple TV without needing a computer or configuration profile. What’s New in tvOS 27
tvOS 27 is a relatively modest update compared to concurrent releases across Apple’s ecosystem. The marquee features include a redesigned Podcasts app, app launch speeds up to 30 percent faster, smoother animations throughout the system, a more responsive Control Center, and faster AirPlay connectivity from other Apple devices. Apple Music gains Hi-Res Lossless audio support on Apple TV for the first time, and the Settings app now displays AppleCare coverage details. Accessibility improvements add options for larger text sizes to make the tvOS interface easier to read on living room displays.
Hardware Compatibility and What Comes Next
tvOS 27 supports only Apple TV 4K (2nd generation, 2021) and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022). The Apple TV HD from 2015 and Apple TV 4K (1st generation) from 2017 will not receive the update, marking a clear generational cutoff for software support. That timing will likely coincide with new Apple TV hardware, which is reported to be nearly ready to launch this fall with faster processors that support Siri AI. This places both the software and new devices for a coordinated announcement.
