Here are the complete release notes for the new update:

  • Added Background Refresh push option to enable new notification types:
  • New Follower notifications
  • Quote Tweet notifications
  • Enable notifications when specific users Tweet
  • Refreshed unread counter
  • Refreshed icons

Background Notifications in Tweetbot

The new Background Notifications can be enabled by going to Settings > Twitter account > Notifications in Tweetbot. Once enabled, you can enable it for various notifications like quotes, direct messages, followers, and tweets from specific users by going to their profiles.

The new Background Refresh feature is different than usual push notifications. It supports notifications for followers, quotes, and user tweets and also respects mute filters. However, it increases battery and network usage and force quitting the app means that it stops functioning, unlike push notifications.

Background Refresh push can also result in delays in receiving notifications, which is governed by iOS. The delay can be anywhere between 10 minutes and 60 minutes. Enabling low power mode also turned off background notifications.

The official Twitter app provides rich notifications without the need for background refresh but does not provide an API to third-party developers to provide similar functionality. This is why Tweetbot has created this feature.

The update also includes refreshed icons throughout the app which look a lot better than before. A new unread counter is also available as part of the main feed.

Tapbots had previously released Tweetbot 7.0 this month with a new stats tab and new themes. The stats tab provides insights into tweet likes, retweets, replies, quotes, and follows for a user’s account.

Tweetbot is available for $0.99 per month or $5.99 per year as a universal app for both iPhone and iPad. Given its features and user interface, it is a steal at this price.
