watchOS 9 released – features, supported Apple Watch models, and how to update

Apple has released the final version of watchOS 9 for all compatible Apple Watch models. The new software update features new watch faces, Low Power Mode, international roaming, and multiple improvements to Workout, Fitness, Compass, Sleep, Afib History, Family Setup, Accessibility, and more.

What’s new in watchOS 9?

watchOS 9 features updates to existing watch faces like Astronomy, Lunar, Playtime, but also new watch faces like Metropolitan. Apple has also made Nike watch faces available to all Apple Watch models. Rich complications and customization support has also been added to other watch faces, while portraits now support images of dogs and cats.

Workout app now features new views, more workout types, as well as personalized zones based on heart rate. Users can now set workout alerts for different metrics like pace, power, and heart rate zones. Running workouts also show more metrics than before on Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 6 and later.

Fitness+ now shows additional data for targets Treadmill workouts, while guidance and metrics are shown on-screen for supported third-party TVs and devices.

Compass app has been redesigned with zoomable views and detailed information, as well as the ability to mark the current position or location of interest. User’s historic path can also be traced via Backtrack using GPS, in case they get lost.

Family Setup now supports the Podcast app, while third-party email support now includes Yahoo and Outlook. AFib History now shows weekly notifications with comparisons to the previous week, and highlights show which day and time of the week AFib was highest.

A new Lower Power Mode extends Apple Watch battery life by disabling background features including always-on display and heart rate notifications.

Update your Watch to watchOS 9

Before updating, make sure that your Apple Watch and paired iPhone are connected to a stable Internet connection and have at least 50% battery charge. Place your Apple Watch on its charger, go to the Watch app on your iPhone and go to General > Software Update. Wait for the update to show to start the download process.
