Which 14-Inch MacBook Pro with M6 to Pre-Order

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 pre-order opens October 28 on apple.com and in the Apple Store app, and availability starts Friday, November 6. The base model costs $1,999 and comes in silver or black. The configuration you pick matters more than the base price suggests, starting with memory.

Pre-order the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 at 24GB to get the full 170GB/s of memory bandwidth

The 16GB base model runs at 153GB/s of memory bandwidth. The 24GB and 32GB models run at 170GB/s, which is about 11 percent more, on the same 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU.

Memory and storage upgrade prices appear in Apple’s configurator when pre-orders open on October 28. Storage comes in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB.

If you plan to run local AI models or keep a lot of apps open, I would start at 24GB.

The 70W adapter in the box is not the 96W adapter listed for fast charging

Fast charging needs a 96W or higher USB-C power source, according to Apple’s tech specs, and the box includes a 70W USB-C Power Adapter. Apple does not say whether the 70W adapter reaches the advertised 50 percent charge in about 30 minutes, so a 96W adapter is the safe choice if you want that speed.

The 18-core 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Max both ship with a 96W adapter. Any charger you buy for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 should deliver at least 60W.

Wi-Fi 7 and nano-texture are the upgrades over the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5

The Apple N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 to the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, up from Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 on the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5. Nano-texture is also a configurable display option and includes a polishing cloth.

Apple’s current buy page for the M5 lineup offers nano-texture only on M5 Pro configurations, not on the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5. The 14.2-inch display, the ports and the 72.4Wh battery carry over, and battery life is up to 24 hours of video streaming.

Thunderbolt 5 and more than 32GB of memory still require a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 uses Thunderbolt 4, supports two external displays and tops out at 32GB of memory. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro uses Thunderbolt 5, supports three external displays, goes up to 64GB of memory and reaches 307GB/s of bandwidth.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 has the longest battery rating of the three and is the lightest at 3.4 pounds. The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips add more CPU and GPU cores, as the table shows.

Apple Upgrade starts at $38.99 a month for 36 months and ends with a decision

Education pricing starts at $1,899 for current and newly accepted college students and educators. Apple Card Monthly Installments is 0 percent APR for qualified buyers, with 3 percent Daily Cash. Apple Trade In credit applies toward a new Mac and can lower monthly lease payments.

Apple Upgrade is a Klarna lease. A $1,999 model costs $38.99 a month for 36 months or $53.99 a month for 24 months, before taxes and trade-in credit. Applicants must be US residents, at least 18, with a valid SSN or ITIN, and the first payment is due about 30 days after shipment or pickup.

Insurance is not included, and damage fees may apply. At the end of the term you can upgrade, terminate or buy the device, and if you do none of those the lease converts to month-to-month for up to six months.

Our Take

I would pre-order the 24GB model in silver or black and add a 96W adapter. Anyone who needs Thunderbolt 5 or a third external display should look at the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro instead.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro is reportedly part of Apple’s Pro and Tell event on October 28, which is the same day pre-orders open. Anyone who wants OLED and touch can watch the event before placing an order.
