Apple held its earnings call for the first quarter of 2021 on Wednesday, January 27 and CEO, Tim Cook announced that its audio and video calling service, FaceTime saw the highest volume of calls on Christmas in 2020. The volume suggests the service’s popularity and usage.
The company also announced that it has achieved a new high watermark of over 1.65 billion devices of the installed base of active devices in the December quarter. And a decisive combination of hardware and software was beneficial for its services. Cook said that “deep integration of hardware, software, and services have always defined our approach here, and it has delivered an all-time quarterly services record of $15.8 billion.”
Apple recorded the highest FaceTime calls volume on Christmas 2020
After the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, last year, Apple’s services like News and FaceTime saw a boost in Q2 2020. Cook said:
The daily use of iMessage and FaceTime services has increased to a new all-time high record during the COVID-19 pandemic. Apple News increased to 125 million monthly users, despite being available in only 4 markets, during the pandemic as the need for credible news sources for coronavirus updates has increased.
And the positive trend continued till the end of the year, which an all-time high call volume on the audio and video calling service. During the Q1 2021 earnings call, Cook said:
But this year was unique. We had a record number of device activations during the last week of the quarter. And as COVID-19 kept us apart, we saw the highest volume of FaceTime calls ever this Christmas. As always, we could not have made so many holidays special without our talented and dedicated retail teams who helped us achieve a new all-time revenue record for retail, driven by very strong performance in our online store.
