Apple kicked off a new iPad beta cycle today, and it caught developers off guard. Rather than the iPadOS 27.1 update most people expected, Apple released iPadOS 27.2 beta 1 instead.
iPadOS 27 launched to all users earlier this week, and Apple has now skipped right over 27.1 for beta testers. It is unclear why Apple chose to number the release this way, though the working theory points back to iPhone Duo.
Two Features Apple Pulled From iPadOS 27 Could Return
Shortly before iPadOS 27 shipped, Apple removed two features that had been available during testing. The Messages app lost its Suggestions feature, and the Passwords app lost the option to agentically replace compromised logins with secure new ones. Apple has not said when either feature will return.
So far, we have found support for additional Siri AI languages, new profiles in Apple TV app, dual camera in Group FaceTime calls, and the redesigned Health app.
Apple has already confirmed a completely redesigned Health app is coming to iPhone later this year with new AI features. Since iOS 27.2 beta 1 shipped the same day with that Health app redesign included, there is a real chance the iPad version follows in this same beta.
iPadOS 27.2 Compatible iPads
iPadOS 27.2 is compatible with these iPad models:
- iPad Pro 4th generation and later with M1 and later
- iPad Air 4th generation and later with M2 and later
- iPad 9th generation and later, including models with A16
- iPad mini 6th generation with A17 Pro
Apple Intelligence requires an iPad mini with A17 Pro or an iPad with M1 or later. Some Apple Intelligence features also have language, region, and usage requirements.
To install the update, make sure that you are registered to the Apple Developer Program and signed into your iPad with the same Apple ID. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and enable developer beta updates. You should see this new update appear shortly for download. Make sure you are connected to a stable WiFi connection and have at least 50% battery charge before starting the download and installation process.
