Apple’s beta wave this week reached the rest of its device lineup too. The company released developer beta 1 for watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, and more today, and once again it is not the update anyone expected.
Apple confirmed previously that iOS 27.1 will ship in October, ahead of the iPhone Duo launch. That confirmation made watchOS 27.1, tvOS 27.1, and visionOS 27.1 seem like a given too. Instead, Apple has jumped straight to the 27.2 beta across the board.
The working theory is that the 27.1 updates across Apple’s platforms will focus narrowly on iPhone Duo compatibility, with few, if any, other changes. If that holds, watchOS 27.1 and tvOS 27.1 could ship as little more than security patches and compatibility fixes before the more substantial 27.2 updates follow soon after.
Which Apple Watch and Apple TV Models Support This Update
watchOS 27.2 carries the same compatibility line Apple set with watchOS 27 back in June, and it is a short list. Apple cut support for ten older models in one release, the biggest compatibility reduction the platform has seen.
The following watch models are compatible with watchOS 27.2:
- Apple Watch Series 11
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Ultra 3
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch SE 3
tvOS 27.2 is compatible with the following models:
- Compatible: Apple TV 4K (2nd generation, 2021) and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022)
- Not compatible: Apple TV HD (2015) and Apple TV 4K (1st generation, 2017)
How to Install watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and visionOS 27.2 Beta 1
Once your Apple Account is enrolled to the Apple Developer program, each device pulls the beta directly from its own settings menu. No configuration profile download is required.
On Apple Watch:
- Make sure the paired iPhone is running iOS 27.2 beta 1
- Open the Watch app on iPhone and stay on the My Watch tab
- Tap General, then Software Update
- Tap Beta Updates, then select the watchOS 27.2 developer beta
- Tap Download and Install
On Apple TV:
- Open Settings on Apple TV
- Go to System, then Software Updates
- Select Get Updates Automatically or check manually
- Sign in with the same Apple Account enrolled in the Apple Developer Program if prompted
- Choose the tvOS 27.2 developer beta and install
On Apple Vision Pro:
- Open Settings on Apple Vision Pro
- Go to General, then Software Update
- Enable Beta Updates if it is not already on
- Select the visionOS 27.2 developer beta
- Tap Download and Install, then take off the headset while it installs
Beta software cannot be downgraded once installed, so anyone relying on their Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Apple Vision Pro daily should weigh that before jumping in.
