Apple Watch has wished people happy birthday at midnight for almost a decade, and iOS 27 just brought a version of that celebration to the Phone app. Calling a contact whose birthday is saved that day now triggers a small on-screen celebration during the call. This is Apple’s way of ensuring that you do not forget anyone’s birthday and wish them during the call.
The behavior was also shown in a video posted by X user Tiino-X83. A banner appears during the call showing a celebratory animation, tied to whatever birthday date is saved for that contact. This works regardless of where your contacts are stored, be it iCloud, Gmail, or a Microsoft account. All you need to do is ensure that the contact information is being synced to the app so that iOS 27 can detect their birthdate.

Apple Watch Has Done This Since 2017
Apple Watch has marked birthdays with an on-screen celebration since watchOS 4 launched in 2017, showing an animated banner at midnight for both a birthday and the New Year. The two occasions have traditionally used different visuals, balloons for a birthday and fireworks for the New Year, though Apple has not confirmed whether the new Phone app banner in iOS 27 borrows from one of those, the other, or a version built specifically for this feature.
Birthdays Are a Recurring Theme in This Year’s Updates
Apple has not documented the Phone app animation in its official iOS 27 release notes, so the exact conditions that trigger it, including whether it depends on a birthday saved in Contacts specifically versus Calendar, remain unconfirmed. It fits a pattern showing up elsewhere in this year’s software, though. watchOS 27’s Smart Stack now surfaces birthday reminders for close contacts automatically, without needing to open Calendar or Contacts first.
The feature requires a contact’s birthday to already be saved in the Contacts app, the same information Calendar and Smart Stack both pull from for their own birthday reminders.
