iPhone Duo buyers may want to stay off the iOS 27.2 beta for now. Apple appears to be saving iOS 27.1 for the iPhone Duo alone, which is why the betas jumped straight from iOS 27 to iOS 27.2.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman covered this in the Q&A section of his latest Power On newsletter. He says anyone planning to get an iPhone Duo should be wary of testing iOS 27.2 right now, because the differing version numbers could complicate setup on Oct. 23.
Apple Skipped iOS 27.1 Because It Appears to Belong to the iPhone Duo
Apple released the first 27.2 betas of its major operating systems this past week. The iOS 27.2 Beta 1 release for iPhone and the iPadOS 27.2 Beta 1 release both skipped version 27.1. Gurman’s read is that the 27.1 release is exclusive to the iPhone Duo.
Gurman does not spell out exactly what could go wrong during setup. Apple generally does not let you restore a backup made on a newer version of iOS onto a device running an older one, which is a common snag when moving from a beta iPhone to a new device.
The iOS 27.2 Beta Adds Health App Testing, Apple TV Profiles and More Siri AI Languages
The beta does carry some notable changes, which explains why plenty of people will be tempted to install it. Gurman points to three in particular:
- Health app: Apple says the new Health app is expected to arrive in a later release, but it is using iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 to test it early with developers and others in the company’s beta programs
- Apple TV app: User profiles are supported in the Apple TV app for the first time outside of tvOS
- Siri AI: Support for more languages
The safest route is to keep the iPhone you are upgrading from on the public release of iOS 27 until the iPhone Duo is set up. Developers who want an early look can use the virtual iPhone Duo to test their apps instead of putting a beta on a phone they depend on.
Our Take
I think the Health app testing is the only real reason to install this beta early, and Apple already says the full version is coming in a later release. For anyone with an iPhone Duo on order, waiting for the public iOS 27.2 release costs very little.
