Apple released Xcode 27.1 beta 1 today, and it is the first version of the tool that lets developers actually build and test apps for the iPhone Duo. The foldable does not reach customers until next month, but developers can already try their apps on it inside a simulator.
The release meets a promise Apple made earlier this year to get iPhone Duo development tools into developers’ hands before the end of September.
An iPhone Duo Simulator Lets Developers Test Apps Before the Hardware Ships
Xcode 27.1 beta adds a virtual iPhone Duo to Apple’s iPhone Simulator, so developers can run their apps against a simulated version of the foldable’s screen without owning the physical device. One developer already shared an early screenshot of an app running inside the new simulator, showing the interface adjusting to the iPhone Duo’s unfolded shape.
Apps built against Apple’s iOS 26 SDK still need an update to iOS 27 for basic iPhone Duo support. Getting full advantage of the larger, unfolded display requires targeting iOS 27.1 specifically, along with the sizing and layout work that is expected to come with supporting a screen shape no other iPhone has used before.

Why iPhone Duo Runs on a Different iOS Version Than Every Other iPhone
iPhone Duo will not run the same iOS build as the rest of the iPhone lineup at launch. Standard iPhones are already moving on to iOS 27.2, arriving through a beta Apple released earlier this week, while iPhone Duo ships on iOS 27.1, a version built specifically for the foldable. The two tracks are expected to sync back up in a later software update.
Properly optimizing an app for a folding screen is a bigger job than most developers will finish in a few weeks, and Apple knows that. Shipping a working simulator now, over a month before the hardware exists in stores, gives developers real runway to get sizing and layout right instead of scrambling after launch day the way plenty of iPad apps still look stretched out years after their own transition.
iPhone Duo opens for pre-order on October 16 and ships October 23, with pricing starting at $1,999.
