The touchscreen MacBook Pro hinge is connected to the iPhone Duo 2 and iPhone Duo 3, a leaker says. Apple is expected to unveil the touchscreen MacBook Pro at its Pro and Tell event in Los Angeles on October 28 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
Fixed Focus Digital said in a Weibo post early on October 28 China time that the touchscreen MacBook Pro appears to focus on hinge improvements. The leaker added that they line up with where the iPhone Duo 2 and iPhone Duo 3 are heading. The post does not say what changed in the hinge, and Apple has not commented on any link to the iPhone Duo.
Gurman says the touchscreen MacBook Pro hinge stops wobble
The only concrete hinge details so far come from Mark Gurman. He has described a revamped hinge that keeps the display steady when you touch it, and he reports cooling changes that improve airflow through the hinge area.
The leaker also repeated that the touchscreen MacBook Pro uses a dual-layer OLED display and will cost a good deal more than the current MacBook Pro. Gurman has reported that Apple discussed $2,899 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro, up from $2,499 now.
If that figure holds, the touchscreen MacBook Pro would sit $900 above the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, which Apple announced on October 27 at $1,999. Gurman has said the touchscreen MacBook Pro could go on sale as early as November 6.
The iPhone Duo 3 is not due until 2028
The iPhone Duo 2 is expected next fall, and prototypes reportedly include Face ID under the outer display. Gurman has said the iPhone Duo 3 inner display is expected to grow by about half an inch from today’s 7.6 inches, and that model is a 2028 product.
The hinge is also where iPhone Duo owners are reporting trouble. Teardowns of cracked units point to the center of the hinge, and Apple describes the mechanism as more than 100 components. The first iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23, so any hinge changes for the iPhone Duo 2 would arrive about a year later.
