Apple grew by 21% in October while rivals saw a decline in China – Report

A new smartphone market survey by Counterpoint Research reveals that Apple reached the highest-ever monthly market share in China and emerged as the winner of Huawei’s share in the premium market.

Previously, Canalys’ latest intelligence report on mainland China’s smartphone market also said that Apple saw 36% Y-o-Y growth in Q3, 2022 while its Android competitors faced a decline between 16% to 27%. Strong demand for iPhone 14 Pro models drove up sales in that quarter.

One in every four devices sold in China was an iPhone in October, iPhone 14 Pro Max the most popular model

While smartphone sales in China saw a 15% Y-o-Y decline, Apple only saw a 4% Y-o-Y decline. And the tech giant grew 21% M-o-M when other OEMs declined in October.

The popularity of the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro aided Apple in reaching its highest-ever monthly market share of 25% in China in October 2022 and becoming the country’s #1OEM for the second consecutive month.

One in every four devices sold in China during the month was an iPhone. October also marked the first full month of iPhone 14 series sales. The iPhone 14 Pro Max was the best-selling device in China during the month, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro.

Commenting on Apple’s success, research Director Ethan Qi said that the tech giant managed to defy the market trend and dominated the premium segment.

Looking at the trend for the last two years in China, it is evident that Apple has emerged as a clear winner of Huawei’s share in the premium market. It has almost become an undisputed leader in China’s premium segment. The iPhone 14 series has started off well with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max performing better than the previous generation. The iPhone 13 also continues to do well, as the iPhone 14 offers little differentiation from the iPhone 13.

Senior Analyst Varun Mishra explained that advanced features in the latest iPhone 14 Pro lineup like the A16 Bionic processor, 48MP camera system, Dynamic Island, and others have not boosted iPhone 14 Pro models’ popularity in China but also in other parts of the world. “Overall, the Pro series will help Apple reach record average selling prices (ASPs) in 2022.”
