Apple Watch Series 6 teardown by iFixit reveals bigger Taptic engine, battery, pulse oximeter and more

Apple Watch Series 6 was launched last week at the September 15 event, ‘Time Flies’. Popular teardown website, iFixit did a teardown of the 44mm GPS + LTE model of the latest smartwatch series 6 to reveal new and improved hardware like a bigger battery, Taptic engine, sensor and more. They also shared internal specs of the 40mm model from time to time.

The new Apple Watch Series 6 runs on the latest watchOS 7 and offers many new and innovative features. For the first time, Apple has introduced new colors like product red, blue, and gold to the existing color options. In addition, new solo bands were also launched with two variants.

Although the new Series 6 looks similar to Series 5, there are significant improvements in the latest smartwatch model. iFixit‘s step by step teardown revealed the complex internal mechanism and hardware of the watch.

  • LTPO OLED Retina display- without Force Touch and optimized for always-on display
  • Pulse oximeter sensor- to measure blood oxygen levels
  • 64-bit dual-core Apple S6
  • Bigger 1.17 Wh battery in the 44mm model and 1.024 Wh battery in the 40mm model
  • Fewer display connectors

  • Made from 100% recycled tungsten and rare earth metals
  • Skyworks chip-239-7 and other mysterious chips
  • Slightly modified footprint with a narrower lip

Repairability Score

iFixit gave the Apple Watch Series 6, a 6 out of 10 on the repairability score based on the following factors:

  • Screen replacement- difficult but possible
  • Battery replacement- reasonably straight forward
  • Tiny tri-point screws- difficult to remove and place back
  • S6 package- very difficult to replace due to many component flex cables on top of it.

According to the publisher, the removal of Force Touch has made it easier to open the smartwatch for repair.

Apple Watch Series 6To summarise the changes from Series 5, the Apple Watch Series 6 opens to a side like a book with a slightly bigger battery, ” a 3.5% increase for the 44 mm battery, and an even bigger 8.5% increase for the 40 mm from their Series 5 counterparts.” The Taptic Engine is bigger than the predecessor model. The publisher’s final verdict is,

“Apple somehow packed more battery and more Taptic Engine into a (barely) smaller design. Impressive!”
