Apple has flipped the switch on AppleCare One Family. The plan first surfaced as an announcement earlier this month, and as of September 14, US customers can actually sign up for it through the Settings app.
AppleCare One Family costs $49.99 a month and covers the Apple devices of everyone in a Family Sharing group, up to six people. Coverage matches AppleCare+, including accidental damage protection plus theft and loss coverage for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. The same service fees and deductibles from AppleCare+ carry over, and the family gets up to six loss or theft claims per year, shared across the group.
Every Device Already Covered Gets Pulled Into The Family Plan Automatically
Signing up isn’t a device-by-device process. Any iPhone, iPad, or Mac already enrolled in AppleCare gets folded into AppleCare One Family the moment someone in the group activates it.
Devices bought within the last 60 days are also auto-enrolled during setup, even without existing AppleCare coverage. That covers most recent purchases without any extra steps.
Older Devices Need To Pass A Condition Check First
Apple isn’t locking the plan to new hardware only. Devices up to four years old, or one year old for AirPods and Beats, can still be added.
Those older devices go through a device check to confirm they’re in working condition before Apple accepts them onto the plan. Anything that fails the check stays out.
- Devices with existing AppleCare, or purchased in the last 60 days: enrolled automatically
- iPhone, iPad, and Mac up to four years old: eligible after a condition check
- AirPods and Beats up to one year old: eligible after a condition check
- Devices not in working condition: not eligible
Vision Pro Is The One Product With A Hard Cap
Apple places almost no limit on how many devices a family can add. The entire household’s device list qualifies for coverage under the single subscription.
Apple Vision Pro is the exception. The company caps coverage at six headsets per family plan, regardless of how many other devices are on the account.
Devices Have To Check In With Apple At Least Once A Year
Coverage doesn’t just run in the background forever without conditions. Every device on AppleCare One Family has to connect with Apple’s servers at least once every 12 months to stay covered.
Apple can also drop a device from the plan if service parts for that device become unavailable. And coverage is tied to sign-in status. Every device needs to stay signed into an Apple Account that belongs to a member of the Family Sharing group. If someone signs out and a different Apple Account outside the family signs in, that device loses coverage immediately.
Any Adult In The Family Group Can Start The Plan
Apple doesn’t restrict signup to the family organizer. Any adult member of the Family Sharing group can start an AppleCare One Family subscription.
Billing follows Purchase Sharing settings by default, so the family organizer picks up the monthly charge automatically. Apple does allow the person who starts the plan to use their own payment method instead, if the family prefers to split costs differently.

AppleCare One launched back in July 2025 as Apple’s first subscription-style, multi-device coverage plan. AppleCare One Family sits above it as the option built for households running more Apple hardware than three devices can cover.
Our Take
The math on this one is straightforward for any family running more than five or six AppleCare-eligible devices between them. I count phones, tablets, watches, and a couple of AirPods cases in my own household, and $49.99 flat beats stacking individual AppleCare+ plans pretty fast once you cross that threshold.
The part worth watching is the Apple Account sign-in requirement. Families sharing devices loosely, especially with older teenagers who might sign into their own account temporarily, could lose coverage on a device without realizing it happened.
AppleCare One Family is limited to the United States for now, while the original AppleCare One plan has already expanded to Australia, France, Germany, and the UK.
