CalibReader Turns the Open iPhone Duo into a Two-Page Book

CalibReader is an EPUB and PDF reader that treats the open iPhone Duo as a book. Held open, it shows a two-page spread with page curls, and closed, the outer display shows the cover of the book you are reading.

Developer Mike Klodnicki is launching CalibReader on October 23, the day the iPhone Duo goes on sale, and a TestFlight beta is open ahead of launch. The same app runs on iPhone and iPad, and it arrives alongside the first iPhone Duo launch apps.

The Open iPhone Duo Becomes a Two-Page Book With Page Curls

On the inner display, pages sit side by side as a spread with a ribbon in the gutter, and turning a page curls it like paper. Your place holds through every fold. When you close the phone, the outer display shows the book’s cover, and you can keep reading one page at a time.

Quick Look is reportedly getting a two-page layout in the same open book position, with each half of the screen holding one page. CalibReader applies that idea to a whole library of EPUBs and PDFs, and on iPad the same spread appears in landscape in both the light and navy themes.

Apple lists the iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display as 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which gives two pages room to sit side by side. The developer has also posted demo videos of CalibReader on the iPhone Duo in light and dark themes.

Libraries Load From iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or a Home NAS

On iPhone and iPad, CalibReader is a book-style reader for your own EPUBs and PDFs, or for a full calibre library kept in iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or on a NAS. It is not affiliated with the calibre project. PDFs open in the same reader as EPUBs, and the light and navy themes are built in.

The library has Home, Series, Grid and List views, plus a details page for each book. Grid shows covers with synopses and reading progress, List adds columns for pages, published date, date added, format and read status, and Series groups books by series and shows how far along each one is.

The developer says CalibReader needs no account and uses no proprietary cloud, and your books and reading history never pass through a CalibReader server.

CalibReader Costs $9.99 Once After Three Free Books

After the first three free books, a single $9.99 purchase unlocks the app, with no subscription and no ads. CalibReader launches Friday, October 23, on iPhone, iPad and iPhone Duo.
